Promoting Healthy Eating in Children: My Challenges and Success with My Cousins

Getting children to eat healthily these days is a serious challenge, and at times, it feels like a family war between the mother and the children, hahahaha! Some kids are so used to junk food that it seems like they are wired that way. I have watched my senior friends and aunties battle with this same issue, and since I wasn't the one in the picture, it was somehow funny to me. I used to laugh when the mother would chase the kids around the house with a cane, trying to get them to eat properly and at the right time.

However, reality hit me when my uncle and his wife traveled for a business trip, leaving me in charge of my little cousins for about two to three weeks. That was when I realized my challenge had begun. At first, I didn’t think it would be difficult, I assumed they would respect "Uncle" and follow my instructions. Ahahaha! I never knew I was about to start my own war with my little cousins.

The first evening after their parents left, they behaved themselves because they weren’t happy about both parents traveling at the same time. However, my real wahala started the following day when they returned from school and immediately went for their usual junk food. No way! That wasn’t going to happen under my watch. I was now in charge, and they had to follow my instructions. I told them they could continue with their junk-filled lifestyle once their parents returned, but for now, things had to change. They simply looked at me, smiled, and acted as if I wasn’t even talking to human beings.

For about three days, I kept shouting, but nothing changed. I was completely exhausted. These little humans were going to send me to an early grave if I didn’t find another approach. I needed to have a gentleman’s discussion with them and come up with a better strategy to get them to eat right.

My Strategies

1 . I promised to take them out every evening to watch a movie if they followed my instructions, ate more vegetables, and included fruits in their diet at the right time. Since their parents had left enough money, I made sure to keep my promise.

2 . Involvement in Decision-Making: I allowed them to participate in deciding what meals we would cook each day and also ensured they took part in the cooking process. This made them feel involved and excited about the food.

3 . Compromise on Junk Food: Instead of completely banning them from eating junk, I made them agree on a specific time to have it, mostly when we were out at the movie center or park in the evening.

4 . Education Through Stories and Videos: I showed them videos about diseases caused by unhealthy eating and narrated fictional stories about the effects of consuming too much junk food.

Oh mehn! Those two weeks were not easy, ahahahaha! But in the end, I was happy because I successfully helped them adopt healthier eating habits and reduce their junk food intake.

The Positive Impact

When their parents returned after two weeks, they immediately noticed a difference. My cousins had adopted a new eating pattern, looked healthier, had more energy, and even appeared fresher. This experience taught me that promoting healthy eating habits in children requires patience, creativity, and consistency. Instead of forcing them to change, making healthy food enjoyable and engaging helps children develop a positive attitude toward nutrition.

In the end, the effort is worth it because a child’s health today shapes their well-being tomorrow.
