Hello everyone, I genuinely hope that you all are doing wonderfully well.

It is Hive Music Festival week 118, round 1.

For this round, I am going to be performing a blues standard that I have come to love so much in recent times—A song titled Magnolia.

Magnolia is a blues song that was first released by JJ Cale in 1971. Eric Clapton and John Mayer recorded a cover version in 2014 which I have come to absolutely love! It was my most listened to song on Spotify last year. Apparently, I was among the top 0.0005% of listeners worldwide. That's how much I love the song💯✨. Lol. I've got a bit of a long distance relationship thing going on at the moment because if graduated a couple of months ago while my girlfriend is still a student of the University. Perhaps, that's partly why I have come to love the song so much more and relate to it greatly. You know, coz she drives me mad😌.

In one word, I would describe this song as SILKY. There is simply a smoothness to it, like a calm river flowing undisturbed. The calm and smoothness of the instrumentals provide a soft bed for the message of the lyrics to lie on, like a bed made out of clouds. The guitar playing in this song is simply exquisite, no doubt about it. The way the notes are picked with such intentionality that you just can't help it but have your soul melt and make weird faces under the influence of that sweet tone.

The song basically talks about a man longing for his woman, missing her at the slightest trigger, and eagerly hoping to return to her loving arms. This theme of love is one that I am sure we can all relate to. If not all of us, I am sure that most of us have fallen in love at one time or the other before and for some reason have had to be separate from them for a while. This goes out especially to the long distance relationship folks out there. May your time apart be short.

I hope you enjoy my humble acoustic recording of this song.

Here are the lyrics of Magnolia.

Whippoorwill's singing
Soft summer breeze
Makes me think of my babe
I left down in New Orleans
I left down in New Orleans

Magnolia, you sweet thing
You're driving me mad
Got to get back to you, babe
You're the best I ever had
You're the best I ever had

You whisper "Good morning"
So gently in my ear
I'm coming home to you, babe
I'll soon be there
I'll soon be there

Magnolia, you sweet thing
You're driving me mad
I got to get back to you, babe
You're the best I ever had
You're the best I ever had
You're the best I ever had
You're the best I ever had
