The area where I grew up sits near a collection of relatively small towns. Probably the closest city that anyone would actually recognize is Flint, MI (due to unfortunate circumstances) and that is still about 45 minutes away.
Needless to say, despite the occasional chain restaurant that is named after a celebrity or endorsed by them, we have very little in the way of celebrity restaurants. Columbus, OH on the other hand is a different story. We try to get down that way at least once a month or every other month to visit my wife's family.
I've mentioned this before, but Columbus is a huge foodie town. They have all kinds of special restaurants and amazing places to eat. This weekend, I got to add another to my list when I visited El Segundo.
I'd honestly never heard of Cameron Mitchell before, but apparently he is a pretty famous restaurateur. His restaurant group is comprised of 42 locations across the country covering 19 different concepts in 14 different states. Quite of few of them are located right in the Columbus area.
It's honestly pretty impressive what he has built. Follow the link above for more information.
While many times we end up hitting our favorite establishments when we come into down, it is always exciting to try someplace new. When we got into town we found out our niece had a concert Friday night in downtown Columbus. Instead of dropping her off, driving home, and then driving back to pick her up, we decided to just hang out downtown until the concert was over.
We all love Mexican cuisine, so it was pretty quickly decided that we would try to get a table at El Segundo. It was happy hour when we got there, so as you can see from the opening photo we enjoyed a couple of margaritas before a table opened up for us.
We also got a couple of appetizers. This was the queso dip covered in chorizo. It was actually a bit thicker than most queso that I am used to. The flavors were good, but the texture threw me off a little. It came with warm homemade tortillas which were amazing.
We also got a bowl of guacamole which I actually preferred over the queso. It was very fresh and delicious. I think the presentation was a bit nicer than you see here, but I forgot to take pictures until we had already dug into it.
My wife and her sister shared the chicken fajitas. She said they were quite good. For me fajitas is one of those things that you have to work really hard to mess up. They are just so simple and amazing that it is almost a given they are going to be good anywhere you go. I guess the only exception might be the rare times they are served cold. That is always a bummer.
In this case, they were on point!
Sorry for the blurry picture. This is what my brother in law got. It is the Segundo platter and it consists of a couple tacos, a couple enchiladas, and some rice and beans. It was a ton of food, but he ate it all.
Finally, I got one of the entrees that you can choose to have as either a burrito or a bowl. As much as I wanted to get a burrito, I figured the healthier choice was a bowl. Don't let all the "veg" fool you, there was a lot more beneath the surface of this dish.
Like chili verde pork for example. You had a choice of about five proteins for this dish, but I settled on the pork. It was a amazing and worked so well with all of the other components of the bowl. I basically destroyed the whole thing. I was sad when it was finished and a little embarrassed that I essentially inhaled it.
I didn't get any photos of the inside of the place. It was bit dark inside and given the kind of upscale nature of the place, I didn't want to be intrusive. If you are able to get a table or you have time to wait for one, I highly recommend El Segundo. The menu isn't as extensive as some Mexican restaurants in the US, but the stuff on the menu they knock out of the park.
I was actually surprised at how small our bill was when we were finished. We covered one round of drinks for the four of us plus half the fajitas and my bowl and it was still less than $40. Definitely worth it in my book!
