Greetings, fellow foodies!
It's been a while since I last posted in this community because it's kinda been hectic in real life. When I was able to finish my chores earlier, I had the idea of posting what I was going to make for lunch today.
This meal is quite easy to make, and since it largely consists of meat and vegetables, or is chayote a fruit? Let's all find out. This recipe is healthy, too. The ingredients are very easy to find on the market.
Chayote, commonly known in the Philippines as sayote, is a type of squash and belongs to the guord family. I searched it on Wikipedia, just to make sure of what I was saying here, but damn, I was surprised when I found out it's a fruit, not a vegetable! All my life, I thought it was a vegetable! Vegetable or not, it's still packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, so it's still very healthy to eat.
So let's get cooking!
Sautéed Chayote (Ginisang Sayote) Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 pieces medium chayote, peeled, deseeded, and sliced thinly
- 2 medium-ripe tomatoes, sliced
- 1 small onion, diced
- 5 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 kg pork cut in cubes
- cooking oil
- 2 tablespoons of fish sauce or patis
- salt
- ground black pepper
Instructions
- Heat the cooking oil in a pan.
- Sauté the garlic, onion, and tomato.
- Add the pork meat and season it with fish sauce and ground pepper, cover and cook for 8 minutes.
- Add the chayote, stir, and cover. Cook for 8 minutes more.
- Add salt to taste, final stir, and done cooking.
- Serve with steamed rice. Enjoy!
If you prefer the chayote to have a crisper texture, you can cook it for less than 8 minutes; cook longer if you want it to be more soft.
This recipe is so easy to make; the preparation and cooking took less than 30 minutes. The chayote is very versatile too; you can add it to different dishes like tinola as a substitute for the green papaya; it can also be added to chop suey; or you can just simply sauté it with either canned sardines or corned beef. That's why I always have a supply of sayote in the fridge.
Have you tried this recipe, or do you have other recipes with chayote?
