Warum nimmt England als separates Team und nicht UK (Vereinigtes Königreich) als Ganzes bei der UEFA-Europameisterschaft teil?
Gestern beim Halbfinale konnte England noch in letzter Minute das entscheidende Tor gegen die Niederlande schießen und steht am Sonntag gegen Spanien im Finale.
Hab mich gefragt, warum England eigentlich als eigenes Nationalteam und nicht als UK als Ganzes bei der Europameisterschaft antritt?
Wäre das nicht ungefähr so als würde Bayern oder Salzburg als eigenes Team antreten?
Oder ist UK wirklich so groß, eine eigene Union, dass auch Wales, Nordirland und Schottland mit seinen 3, 1.9 bzw. 5.4 Millionen Einwohnern als eigenes Team antreten können?
Im Prinzip ja, aber es hat eher historische Gründe. Das Fußball-Spiel in der heutigen Form wurde nämlich in England im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelt und mit der Gründung der Football Association standardisiert.
Die Geschichte des englischen Fußballs soll sogar bis mindestens ins Mittelalter zurückreichen.
Das dürfte der Grund sein, warum England auch heute noch als eigenständiges Team und Gründungsmitglied bei den Football Association-Spielen antritt.

Why is England taking part in the UEFA European Championship as a separate team and not the UK (United Kingdom) as a whole?
Yesterday in the semi-final England scored the decisive goal against the Netherlands in the last minute and will play Spain in the finals on Sunday.
I was wondering why England is actually competing in the European Championship as its own national team and not as UK as a whole?
Wouldn't that be like Bayern (region of Germany) or Salzburg (region of Austria) competing as their own team?
Or is the UK really so big, a union of its own, that Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, with their populations of 3, 1.9 and 5.4 million respectively, can also take part as separate teams?
In principle, yes, but there are historical reasons for this. The game of soccer as we know it today was developed in England in the 19th century and standardized with the founding of the Football Association.
The history of English football is said to go back at least as far as the Middle Ages.
This is probably the reason why England still competes in Football Association matches today as an independent team and founding member.
