Film opowiada o zorganizowanej wycieczce do Polski - tematycznej, śladami Holocaustu - dwóch kuzynów: Davida (Jesse Eisenberg i Benjiego (rewelacyjny! Kieran Kyle Culkin). Wyruszają oni w tę podróż, aby poznać kraj, z którego pochodziła ich babcia, i uhonorować ją po jej śmierci.
The film tells the story of an organized trip to Poland - thematic, in the footsteps of the Holocaust - of two cousins: David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (amazing! Kieran Kyle Culkin). They set off on this journey to get to know the country their grandmother came from, and to honor her after her death.
Film jest jednak tak naprawdę o czymś zupełnie innym.
However, the film is actually about something completely different.

Raczej nie zamierzam zdradzać szczegółów fabuły, ale może nie chcesz czytać o moich wrażeniach, zanim sam obejrzysz ten film. A moje wrażenia są takie, że jest to uderzająco piękny i wzruszający film opowiadający o różnych obliczach depresji albo kryzysu w życiu. Benji najprawdopodobniej jest osobą bezdomną. Może o tym sugerować choćby to, że na początku jest na lotnisku, czekając długi czas na Davida, nie odbiera telefonu - ani nie ma żadnych usług w telefonie (muzyka, dzwonienie itp. - być może nie ma do kogo dzwonić, być może nie stać go na usługi; w każdym razie telefon ma beż żadnych funkcji). Dodajmy jego celebrację prysznica w pokojach hotelowych oraz to, że na koniec - po powrocie do Stanów - nie decyduje się na powrót do miasta z kuzynem, a zostaje na lotnisku. Choć może dom ma, tylko nie chce do niego wracać - wszak, z tego co wiadomo, mieszkał w piwnicy u matki i tam dokonał próby samobójczej.
Widziałam też intepretacje, że Benji tak naprawdę owej próby samobójczej dokonał z sukcesem, a podróżuje sam David i wizualizuje towarzystwo swojego trudnego kuzyna. Ja jednak nie szłabym w tym kierunku. Moim zdaniem Benji tam był, cały i porąbany, ze swoimi problemami w głowie.
I don't really want to give away the plot details, but maybe you don't want to read about my impressions before you watch the film yourself. And my impressions are that it's a strikingly beautiful and moving film about the different faces of depression or crisis in life. Benji is most likely a homeless person. This may be suggested by the fact that at the beginning he is at the airport, waiting for David for a long time, he doesn't answer the phone - and there are no services on his phone (music, calling, etc. - maybe he has no one to call, maybe he can't afford services; in any case, his phone has no functions). Let's add his celebration of showering in hotel rooms and the fact that at the end - after returning to the States - he decides not to go back to the city with his cousin, but stays at the airport. Although he may have a home, he just doesn't want to go back there - after all, as we know, he lived in the basement with his mother and attempted suicide there. I've also seen interpretations that Benji actually made the suicide attempt successfully, and David is the only one traveling and visualizing the company of his difficult cousin. I wouldn't go in that direction though. In my opinion, Benji was there, whole and messed up, with his own problems in his head.
Z drugiej strony: a może to właśnie on, Benji, jest jedynym normalnym, w tym chorym i niewrażliwym świecie?
On the other hand: maybe he, Benji, is the only normal one in this sick and insensitive world?
Zdjęcia w filmie są świetne. Nie zgadzam się z opiniami, że przedstawiają Polskę w złym świetle, jako zacofany kraj. Hotele wyglądają dokładnie tak, jak je znam. Miasta są piękne. Światło jest cudne. Zieleń soczysta. To co mi się nie zgadza, to auta - faktycznie są stare, i w dodatku niezwykle ich mało w miastach i na drogach.
Muzyka - o rany. W życiu nie wybrałabym muzyki Chopina jako tło do filmu, bo to nie jest tło, to coś co moim zdaniem zagłusza odbiór filmu, przeszkadza. W tym przypadku - w tym filmie, z tą fabułą, z tymi emocjami, tymi zdjęciami - dobór muzyki jest po prostu GENIALNY.
Słowem - polecam, moje serce zostało skradzione.
The film's cinematography is great. I don't agree with the opinions that it presents Poland in a bad light, as a backward country. The hotels look exactly as I know them. The cities are beautiful. The light is wonderful. The greenery is lush. What I don't agree with are the cars - they are indeed old, and what's more, there are very few of them in the cities and on the roads.
Music - oh my. I would never choose Chopin's music as the background for a film, because it's not a background, it's something that in my opinion drowns out the reception of the film, interferes. In this case - in this film, with this plot, with these emotions, these images - the choice of music is simply BRILLIANT.
In a word - I recommend it, my heart has been stolen.
