Parasyte: The Maxim, a Japanese sci-fi thriller written by Hitoshi Iwaaki, bears on Izumi Shinichi, a high schooler whose life is turned upside down when an alien-like life form (Migi) burrows its way into his right hand. From then on, it’s from one threat to the other.
I saw Parasyte: The Grey before I finally saw this one. I loved The Grey but I have to admit, watching the original gave me some goosebumps. Parasyte: The Grey is an adaptation from this 2014-2015 anime, and while it may be old, it was still fresh to watch.
Twenty-Four episodes with a duration of about 23-24 minutes, we follow Shinichi who battles loss of freedom, lives and most of all, his humanity. I didn’t even realise what was happening until Shinichi lost the ability to cry. That was when it dawned on me.
This series provoked a lot of questions in my head (emotions too) but the question that held more weight as I watched as a bystander how a boy so young fought to be “normal” was, “are humans weak?”
I know approaching a movie from this angle is like laying out your mat for disappointment but I couldn’t help it. So many times I yelled at Izumi in my head to “man up” or “to just do it” or I’d cuss him out for being such a whimp. There were moments I even cussed at the writer, I guess it was that intense for me.
Izumi Shinichi, for some reason did not make me hiss as much as Satomi (his girlfriend) did. Izumi went through forced metamorphosis, not just physiologically but also mentally. Izumi lost his ability to feel as a human for a while, or respond as a human would. Satomi saw this as a “bad” change. Honestly, it just ticked me off but how can I blame her? She had no idea what was happening.
This did provoke a thought in my mind. While seeing a movie last year, the character did point out how humans outgrow circumstances and people. Shinichi faced changes as he fought battles both internal and external, and she couldn’t handle that change for a while. She avoided him and Shinichi didn’t really give her a reason to stick around.
This also made me wonder if it was okay for her to remain in his life. Reality as I know it, when people change and those in their life can’t meet up with that change, there’s a rift. These two made it work though because he “came back”. I could never understand that part for some reason. I do know that the older you get, the less some things continue to matter especially things that are not meant to remain a constant.
Parasyte was an emotional rollercoaster. Not only was it a referral to the earth and her whole ecosystem, it was a well laid out plot meant to drive at the “weakness” of humans because that is our strength. I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it however, this is a good watch.
The details are well thought out despite it being animated. The scenes are well paced. They were a tad bit dramatic with some of their characters and scenes but “delayed gratification” I guess.
Overall, I enjoyed watching. If I had to choose between this and the movie, I will likely pick the movie though.
