Netflix users, watch out!
The Carlsen vs. Niemann cheating scandal is confirmed to appear on Netflix in 2025!
Not as a standalone TV-show, but as an episode of the "Untold" project, which covers some of the world's most infamous sport stories. Alongside the Carlsen-Niemann episode, there will also be an episode on the "Liver King" steroid scandal.
Chess.com's CEO Erik Allebest and it´s Chief Chess Officer IM Danny Rensch were interviewed for the documentary. Allebest hinted at major revelations! Also Magnus Carlsen confirmed to appear in the episode. "I've sort of said my piece on camera in a documentary that's coming at some point." he is quoted.
What´s about it in a nutshell:
It all started when Carlsen, after losing to Niemann at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, withdrew from the tournament. He later indirectly hinted that the U.S. teenager had cheated but did not provide any evidence. Niemann has denied all allegations of cheating but admitted to cheating in casual online games when he was 13/14 years old. Chess.com then conducted its own investigation and found evidence that he had likely cheated in hundreds of online games. No proof emerged for cheating over the board.
This "Niemann report" led to a $100 million lawsuit by Niemann against Carlsen, Chess.com and others. A U.S. judge eventually dismissed the lawsuit, and the legal dispute was settled last year.
