October is usually deemed the spook month of the year, isn’t it? However, Halloween is not something we celebrate in my part of the world. In fact, any elder from my part of the world that heard that one of us youngsters was celebrating Halloween, may most likely be whisked off to the nearest religious center for prayers or something of that sort. Lol.
But Halloween as a season brought about some truly amazing cartoon productions that left me stoked and were pretty memorable as far as my early teen years were concerned. In fact, I consider some of these films to be grouped in the class of blockbuster movies. So, without further ado, and in the spirit of the Halloween season, let’s get into these blockbuster productions for the day.
The Addams Family (2019)
This cartoon is not entirely in tune with Halloween as a season, but the spookiness it portrayed with these weird, misfit family, sets it right on par with anything deemed Halloween-worthy. The Addams Family consists of Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children, Wednesday and Pugsley, a disembodied hand called Thing, their butler, Lurch, and other close relatives. What fascinates me and I’m sure most people who’ve seen this production is their laissez faire way of living. An old money clan who delight in all things macabre, they are rather oblivious to the way people see them nor do they care if said people find them frightening.
I think the Addams family would be a delight to anyone who enjoys dark humour and the excitement that comes with a bit or maybe more than a little bit of weirdness. Of course, The Addams family has been an actual movie production since the 1960s, but seeing the animated form of it in 2019 had all the spice it needed to be a perfect fit for the Halloween genre.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Dracula operates a resort which we can call a hotel, housing all the monsters away from the human world and humans who he despises. Dracula lives a somewhat lonely but still rather contented life as he has his daughter who he is beyond protective of. However, his overprotective parent mode goes into overdrive when a human finds his resort and falls in love with his teenaged daughter.
This is a nice Halloween-themed production. It is not what you would deem as scary. In fact, it’s lighthearted in most parts, except for the general spookiness owing to the fact that monsters and not humans are illustrated. Truth be told, Hotel Transylvania got less and less spooky as more parts were released, but I do still find the scripting sensational and worthy of being described as an epic Halloween production.
Coraline (2009)
Coraline is an 11 year old girl who is bored out of her mind in her old house and her new town. She’s somewhat discontent with her way of life and is rather adventurous. So, one day while rambling through her old house, she stumbles on a door that opens up to a place she wouldn’t have ever believed existed and faces the most ideal and desirable version of herself and her family. What she doesn’t know is that her newly found paradise on earth is laced with sinister secrets.
People, when I say that this movie left me nearly traumatized out of my mind when I was young, it would not be a lie. I remember not being able to sleep properly for days because in my opinion, that was more or less the spookiest thing I’d ever seen. I’m not one for the heebie jeebies and halfway through, I was already scared out oof my mind, but I couldn’t stop watching. To be honest, I’ve not tried watching it since then and I do think I’ll fare better watching it now that I’m older and have a higher tolerance for horror animations. But I thought to share it with you today because this, in all honesty, is a movie truly worthy of the Halloween genre.
Okay guys, I certainly do hope this brings back some nostalgic Halloween emotions for you. Enjoy!
