Unlike the cakes in the show, the ones in the above image actually look like cake! See how far I go to avoid copyright violation?
Thanks to Netflix I now want to make everyday objects into cake. Over the weekend, I binge-watched the series "Is it Cake?" on Netflix. Hardly highbrow entertainment, this was a fun show. If you missed the craze, here are some examples of how cake can look like everyday objects (or people). Trigger warning: it can be oddly disturbing to see some things as cake.
The Premise of the Show
The bizarre premise of this show is that contestants must bake cakes that look like everyday objects. Then, the judges, an assortment of C and D list celebrities, have to see if they can pick the cake from among the objects. It's a weird, but oddly wonderful show.
Why I Enjoyed It
I found it implausible that anyone could make a sneaker or a sewing machine that was cake, but convincingly looked like the object. Apparently, baking technology has advanced. However, it was not mere baking technology -- the contestants of the show were all very talented and artistic.
I was surprised by how skilled they were and how realistic most of their creations appeared. It was, to me, a very addictive program.
What I Didn't Like
Contestants were allowed to alter the "decoys" to make them look less real. I don't think this was necessary, and it felt like cheating. It was disappointing. It was particularly rampant in the first episode with "Johnny," and it made me dislike him.
The host was a fool. I can't sugar coat that (pardon the pun). I half-wished someone would check to see if he was cake, but that would be cruel, so... no. However, the thought crossed my mind.
Nevertheless, it was still a very interesting show, and I was happy with the outcome. I read a review of the show that recommended a different baking show instead, but, as someone who watches too many baking shows, I felt this one was cooler.
I liked that the contestants were all very talented. I have watched baking shows that were basically train wrecks of "ha ha, look what a terrible baker I am," but those stress me out. It gives me no cheer to see someone acting like a fool without even realizing it, so this was a breath of fresh air. The contestants were foolish, of course, but not usually when it came to baking.
Conclusion
Apparently, anything can be cake. Now, whenever I look at an everyday object, I think of how it could be cake. I asked my fiancé today whether he thinks fairy lights could be cake... isomalt, modeling chocolate... how would you light them up, though?
This show was a pleasure, albeit a guilty one. Reading other people's reviews, people either loved the show or hated it. Since it was in the top 10 of Netflix, I think most people loved it... maybe secretly?
Much love,
