Good afternoon,
You have probably heard about this dystopian serie, adapted from the book, written by Margaret Atwood.
We've just watched the third season on Prime Video (Amazon). The fourth one is not yet available in Belgium, although it is in France since april 2021. The fifth season is planned for 2022, in France.
Well, in this season, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) is assigned to a new commander, Mr Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford). He is one of the founder of the Republic of Gilead, a theocratic system. He helped his ancient handmaid Emily to escape to Canada, with the baby Nicole. This baby is Nick and June's child, but Nicole was considered as the child of Serena and Fred Waterford, the previous commander of June.
When Emily and Nicole arrived in Canada, they were hosted by June's husband, Luke. Later, Emily will contact her wife and will move to her location with their little son. We do not remain unchanged by such a place. She will have to explain in details what she did in the Republic of Gilead, if it was of her own free will or if it was someone else's order or if it was the situation which required it.
At the same time, June continues to rebel against the system, helped by the other handmaids. She is very good at manipulating other persons, whoever they are in the society.
Her aim is to take her daughter Anna/Agnes, and escape together, trying to reach their father and husband, Luke. As long as Anna is in Gilead, June won't leave and she will do all she can to free her daughter. And if she can put the Republic of Gilead down, she will do it with a great pleasure.
At the end of this season, she seems to be on the good path to have this pleasure, although it's still the beginning of the path.
Often during the episodes, we were thinking that June Osborne was a dangerous and selfish mad woman .. we were also thinking she was not a top model, but that's everyone's feeling, lol.
A dystopia means a possible future and this future is really possible and that's what scares us. To be a commander must be cool, but beeing his wife is less funny already... While the other situations are certainly not enviable at all.
I didn't read the books, I prefer to watch the serie for this kind of story.
What's your review of the books or of the different seasons of the serie, if you read/watched them ?
We do like to watch dystopian stories, to be prepared to every possibility. If you have some titles in mind, don't hesitate to put them in a comment.
Take care !
