My friend said last year that I’ve got a thing for stumbling on horrible movies. I guess he had a point, because about sixty percent of the films I saw and reviewed last year were more than borderline trash. So from about late last year, I promised to only see movies I trust in my heart would have great potential, which is what I did. And so far, it’s been going great. Then, I was on TikTok a few days ago, and saw this clip of a film featuring Keke Palmer and my girl, Sza. And I just knew I was in for a good time.
One of Them Days (2025)
Dreux is a waitress at a diner. She’s loved because of how caring and free-spirited she is. She even won employee of the month. Alyssa, her best friend and roommate, on the other hand, is an artist, who is quite casual about her art and puts up with her deadbeat boyfriend, Keshawn, who lives with them, but does not contribute to the rent.
Now, it’s rent time and they discover that Keshawn has spent the rent money on a non-profitable T-shirt line. Their landlord, Uche, has given them till 6 pm to get his money, or they’ll be tossed to the curb. Which leaves them about 9 hours. Would they be able to get it in time?
My Thoughts and Rating
SPOILER ALERT
When you see a popular figure being featured in a film, you immediately get expectant. Especially when that figure is one of your favourite artistes and isn’t even in the movie industry. You immediately want to know what’s happening. So, was it clickbait or rage bait? That’s what I want to know, because why did this film leave me so mad and disappointed. Data prices have spiked up in my country, so any one from here would guess just how mad I am rn at the waste.
First, the stereotypes. Tyler Perry already gives us so much to chew on with his awful stereotypes of African Americans: Ghetto bits, violent women, deadbeat men, loan sharks and street gangs. So, why am I sitting through all of this again? I’m not sure Perry’s films have this much ghetto displayed. It was incredibly off-putting.
Then the lack of an average plot or storyline. Having ten hours to pay off their rent and going to extreme lengths to pay it. I promise, I’ve seen this storyline one time too many, and some of them even managed to get it right. This, on the other hand, in structure and everything else, was abysmal. Too many loopholes. Lines feeling forced and over-used. Terrible acting. I didn’t crack a smile. Not once. And this is supposed to be an African-American film.
Again, I can’t with the accent. It’s becoming a flex now, I think, for Hollywood to incorporate something Nigerian in it. Either they randomly mention Nigeria as a country, or they feature a cast that’s supposed to be from Nigeria, or they just Nigerian names. And nine out of ten times, it’s not for anything good.
Now your landlord is an "Uche," a supposed Nigerian man, and he couldn’t even get the accent right. Oh accent was better than most, but still, we don’t speak like that. Also, they could have done better with the lip-syncing. It would be obvious to a blind man on a galloping horse who has a hearing impairment, that the voice clearly did not belong to the man speaking. Preposterous, really.
Also, they could have at least tried to give us something to be delighted in. How can you give out four pints, literally four bags of blood, and you’re still able to walk. You’ve still got colour in your face. That too with no food. Everyone’s lip gloss still shining and all of that. And as if that’s not enough, someone gets electrocuted on an electric pole that fries people up in a snap, falls to the ground on another person, and still manages to recount the aftermath of the what happened to her friend who she fell on, and then they both proceed to run a sprint four blocks down the road. Just how?
The only thing I can give this film is the chemistry between Keke Palmer and Sza. You can tell that they’re friends in real life and this did wonders to their flow in the film. I still think that no matter how close you are, it’s impossible for your friend’s deadbeat boyfriend to squander the rent money which your friend witlessly gave him, and you’re still pretty chill about it. I mean, I may have started throwing hands, but that’s just me anyway.
I’m deeply disappointed but like the film said, it’s just one of them days. Hopefully, I don’t get to encounter anymore awful films using people whose work I love in real life as clickbait. A 3.5/10 from me, and that’s just cause I love Sza as a person.
Jhymi🖤
P.S: This movie was rated 4.4/5 stars on IMDB. A whopping 4.4! The reviews I saw made me wonder if they saw the same film I did. Corruption is real guys. Stay safe, lol.
