Fair Play is a movie that came up in the search results while I was looking for movies that have to do with finance, so I decided to watch it.
Characterized as a thriller, drama, mystery, and psychological thriller, this movie is evolving around a loving couple working together at a finance firm.
An unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund pushes a young couple's relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement.
Before I continue, I would like you to know that
- the movie is characterized as 18+ due to some scenes
- I will try not to include any spoiler below
Director: Chloe Domont
Writer: Chloe Domont
Stars: Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan
The movie was released in 2023 and its imdb rating is 6.5 out of 10
My honest rating would be between 5.8 - 6.1
My Review
Fair Play starts with a bang, initially leading you to believe it’s a love story.
While there are romantic elements, the film goes deeper. As the story unfolds, plot twists maintain suspense. Subtle instances, such as workplace relations between men and women, are also part of the narrative.
The main couple's relationship undergoes various stages, and the film also highlights aspects of stocks, bets, and the high-pressure atmosphere of office life during tense moments.
During the first minutes, I wasn’t very impressed with the performances, but as the film progressed, everything began to flow more naturally.
The plot is engaging, the script well-written, and although at times the director’s perspective seems to lean more towards the female character’s side, the film does explore multiple viewpoints.
The ending (to me) was unexpected, and overall, I genuinely enjoyed the movie—most importantly, I did not fall asleep!
While I wouldn’t watch it again, I would recommend it for a two-hour entertainment.
The movie might resonate more with women, but as I watched it alone, I can’t speak to a man’s perspective.
Let me know if you’ve seen it or plan to!
This is the trailer here, but it does contain a few spoilers
I usually watch trailers after I watch a movie :)
