I had a hard time thinking of a movie or TV series I've seen that has a big event or is spinned off from a big event. I thought of Titanic and the nostalgia it brought thinking back to my childhood days when I first saw it but I wanted something more recent as it's been so long I saw Titanic. It's a good option but I'm choosing this.
"Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story" aired months after I had seen the two seasons of "Bridgeton". I remember how I wished I had seen this one before the two seasons as Queen Charlotte was like a throwback to how it all started before the other Bridgeton stories. But in any case, I enjoyed every bit of the short series.
To be honest, when I saw this series, I had not thought of the real life story it was spinned off from. I just enjoyed the series for the storyline and it's amazing casts. As I did have a good time seeing the first two seasons of "Bridgeton", I had high expectations for this one and thankfully it was worth the bingewatch (Just 6 episodes).
The series explores the life of a young lady who goes to London to marry King George the third but faces scrutiny from the King's cunning mother as they hide a fact from her and pressures her to get married and start bearing as much children as she can. The couple grew past their challenges and continue to love themselves.
Two scenes still live rentfree in my head and one remains an iconic one to many viewers, one is where the proposed couple meets for the first time as she tried to run away from marrying who they had refused to tell her about. The second is after their marriage and she realized her husband is staying away from her with no explanations.
About The Big Event - The Rise of A Black Queen
The series is set in the 18th century loosely based on an history of how Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a black woman rose to prominence and power in England after marrying George the third, a king but a mad one. Imagine a country where the blacks had to work extra to get paid or be enslaved, one is chosen to be Queen.
Now I can understand why young Lady Agatha in this series kept reminding Charlotte that she is the first of her kind as Queen and she must use the power given to her. It's a bit funny but it was as in real life back to the century, that Queen Charlotte way of holding the power was giving birth to 15 children for the king, how romantic!
The series is a spinoff of the historical record, portraying Charlotte as a Black woman whose marriage opened doors for people of color in 18th-century England. It is still in truth that many do not believe she was Black but at least, the series made some facts clear and I must say, the casts did a great job in recreating such a story.
I'm really grateful for this prompt that has made me understand better the real life story behind this series I had first seen out of mere entertainment. It's an interesting series to binge watch in less than half a day and you get to imagine how it was in the 18th century England before Black people got more privileges. You can read more about the history and how this movie spins off from it here. I'll rate the series 8/10.
