You won't believe the amount of time I put into thinking what title I could give to put this series out there that it is less than it seem until you see it yourself. I hope it's not a surprise that I'm going for a Korean series that I think it's underrated, I see more of their series than movies from country so it might be I'm directing this to kdrama fans mostly but honestly, this is for everyone.
I had over five Korean series in mind that I think are not hyped enough for everyone to see, series I kinda blame myself for taking so much time before seeing them because of the characters in them and mostly because of their titles. I think mistakes movie lovers tend to make and miss a good movie are one of these two... "I don't like the characters" or "The title isn't giving the vibe".
"Oh My Venus" is that Korean series that I think just anyone and everyone would love if they would just see it. Don't think that the title is kinda somehow, do check it out first. For what reasons? There are like a hundred reasons I'll recommend this series even though it feels like it's not much appreciated as many people tried to recommend it to me until I finally got to join it's viewers.
I had this thought that recent Korean series are becoming even much better with their storylines than the old ones and I've learnt that I'm so wrong. While the recent ones are great, the old ones still remain gold for many to check out. First reason you should check this one out, it's an old series, released about 10 years ago and has a relatable storyline that would have you hooked.
Kang Joo-eun starred by Shin Min-a was the beauty of her hometown during her high school days until 12 years later, she becomes a fat unattractive lawyer and in a relationship of 12 years too. I still can't get how they were able to pull it off but the storyline act made her weight loss journey so real that it pushes viewers with same situation to find motivation to get out of it.
Another reason to see this series is the wealth that's oppressive but didn't limit the chemistry between lead characters as the male lead is a chaebol but also a secret trainer. Imagine a fat unattractive lawyer lady with a handsome, intelligent and rich young man falling in love. A lacking chemistry between them could have been quite understandable but that wasn't the case.
The series has one of the sweetest love story while teaching a lot of lessons about determination, facing the truth and overcoming psychological difficulties. I like that the female lead didn't dwell on the heartbreak from long time relationship that was supposed to lead to marriage and instead found joy in working on her unattractive self, something not many would.
Anyone would also love the series because of Kim Ji-woong starred by Henry Lau, a supporting character that won me over and over until the end of the series with his exciting roles. I had to have some of his other movies downloaded too. The other supporting characters did great with their roles, to make the masterpiece work out. But kudos to Henry Lau's impact even as a supporter.
It's an old series that seeing it this year among recent release could cause some bias about just anything in the series but it wasn't like that for me at all. I was actually impressed that they produced such a masterpiece years ago that even the next 10 years, I bet I'll still enjoy it just as much as I did now. Many have given good review about it but I never believed until I saw it myself.
Now, I'm one of those who's recommending to any who is yet to see it. A 10/10 kdrama that turned out way better than I had expected. The twists, the ost, the creativity, the motivation from storyline, the side stories and most importantly, the comedy, are all good enough reasons to enjoy this series. I hope you'll check it out.
