I love movies. I love watching them, writing about them and talking about them with friends. My favourite thing to do when I'm not working or studying is going to the cinema. It's my happy place. But what if we took that love of movies and turned it into something good? What if you could watch a movie and be reminded to treat others well? What if kindness was the key to unlocking the secrets of our world?
The movie I chose for this category is one that has been close to my heart since I first watched it two years ago. A Wrinkle in Time tells the story of Meg Murry, her brother Charles Wallace and their friend Calvin O'Keefe as they travel through space and time trying to find their father who disappeared after discovering an alien race called tesseracts. The film follows Meg and Charles Wallace as they search for their missing father while also trying to keep the universe from being destroyed by a dark force known as IT. Throughout the journey, Meg learns that she is more than just her parents' daughter but rather a powerful young woman capable of doing great things. She must learn how to use her own abilities and stop IT before it can destroy all life on Earth.
In addition to the action-packed adventure, there are some beautiful messages in the film that I think will resonate with people around the world. One of the most important themes is kindness. Throughout the movie, Meg and Charles Wallace try to help others without expecting anything in return. They want to show the world that even though they don't have much themselves, they are willing to share what they have with those less fortunate. This theme continues throughout the film and is carried out by the characters of Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who, Mrs Which and Mrs Which's daughter, Mrs Who. These women are kind and generous to everyone they meet and are always helping those in need. It isn't until later in the film that we discover that these women were once trapped in the form of animals because of IT. However, they used their power of kindness to transform themselves back into human beings and now use their powers to help others.
Another important theme in the film is family. In order to defeat IT, Meg and Charles Wallace must work together to save the world. During their journey, they learn to rely on each other and understand that although they may fight sometimes, they are ultimately stronger together. They also learn that the people closest to them will support them no matter what. When Meg is forced to give up her beloved tesseract, Mrs Which gives her another one so she can continue her quest. Similarly, Mrs Whatsit gives Charles Wallace his father's journal which he uses to write letters to him. In both cases, the characters give something precious to someone else in order to help them reach their goals.
While the movie does contain violence and scary moments, it also has many positive messages that make it a great choice for families looking for a fun movie night at home. The movie also has a strong female lead, a diverse cast and a powerful message of kindness that I think would appeal to children and adults alike.
That's why I chose A Wrinkle in Time as my submission for the CineTV contest. I hope you enjoy it!
