Hey guys of Cinetv, today I’m going to talk about Robocop, an action film that despite its time of release, still shocks with its brutality and peculiar narrative style.
To start, this movie is not just entertainment about an unstoppable super cybernetic cop, whose mission is to eradicate crime and protect the innocent civilians in a dangerous city, because this film also shows us the rediscovery of a man’s identity and his fight to regain control of himself after being the victim of a brutal and tragic crime that changed his life forever.
The visual and narrative style of this movie takes risk in its explicit violence and somber scenes. At the same time, this movie knows how to develop the aspects that to me are the most remarkable of the film; dehumanization, exaggerated consumerism, media sensationalism and corporative corruption. Topics that are rarely approached in today’s Hollywood productions, maybe for fear of censorship, or because there isn’t a real interested in showing to the world the negative side of their society.
Another notable aspect of the film is how it manages to maintain a strong rhythm with a good balance between the brutality of many scenes and epic action sequences, interchanging them with dark but ingenious jokes to denote the film’s social criticism, without making these scenes feel out of context or forced.
I also liked a lot the way that our super cop protagonist’s abilities work, he has an impressive resistance, superhuman strength, extremely accurate aim to combat crime, but he is not indestructible or infallible, in fact, there are several parts in the film where he receives damage and his partner has to help him in a way that shows that this man, part human and part machine, has limitations, making him a more believable character and less like a fantasy.
Now the only thing that deflates the film a little are the special effects that in some of the action scenes, specifically the ones with the giant robot and the other non-human characters, make the viewer notice how old this movie actually is. Still, the gun shooting sequences and the persecutions, and also Robocop’s design, still look quite good even today, I particularly like the robotic way in which the protagonist moves and his impactful appearance every time his face is uncovered.
In conclusion, this is a coarse film, with brutal action scenes and a strong rhythm not suitable for everyone, the most fascinating aspect of the movie is the journey the protagonist goes through to get back his humanity, and the idea of a futuristic world damaged by crime and consumed by materialism, all this results in a very powerful film.
