Season 2 of The Devil's Hour dropped on Prime.
Without spoilers, let me give you a general idea of the show for those who haven’t even watched the first season. The premise is this: Lucy Chambers, a social worker and mother of a super creepy boy who feels no emotions and acts like a robot, mysteriously wakes up every night at 03:33 for most of her life. In her daily life, she also sees visions, something like snapshots from the future or a parallel reality. It’s unclear exactly what she’s seeing.
The first season is 6 episodes. I struggled through the first three—I thought it was an epic flop, and my main issue was that this supernatural element, which they weren’t explaining, seemed ridiculous. But once they finally explained WHAT she’s seeing and why these things are happening to her, I LOVED it. The show suddenly made a lot more sense and totally won me over. The first season ends, not exactly on a cliffhanger, but while answering the questions we had so far, it left us with three hundred more important ones.
Now we head into the second season, which is 5 episodes this time. The supernatural element is what it is and doesn’t raise any more questions at this point, and I’d say it’s almost secondary now that we know what’s going on. The second season is pure thriller (not horror, a thriller), with suspense at its absolute peak. I imagine you’ve all seen some version of the classic nightmare where someone is chasing you, and you’re hiding, trying to find a way out without being noticed, etc. Well, there was an episode where I felt like that from start to finish. I’m not going to lie, I don’t have a lot of tolerance for suspense—I generally hate it—so for the more seasoned viewers, it might not be as “wow,” but it stressed me out big time. (Granted, it’s not horror though.) Also, I should mention that, while I normally can’t stand being stressed, in any other show/movie where I’d feel this way, I’d 100% Google spoilers or read the plot on Wikipedia to calm down. Here, I didn’t want to do that at all. I don’t know if that’s just me (maybe I’m maturing as a person? Who knows?) or if the show is just epic, but honestly, it grabbed me by the throat and held my attention from start to finish this season.
Of course, it’s well shot, well-lit, well-directed, etc. The suspense is masterfully prolonged, the editing is flawless (which is crucial in a show like this), and the actors are all playing their socks off. Jessica Raine (who I wasn’t particularly impressed with before) really shines in the second season (I won’t say why or in what context to avoid spoilers), and Peter Capaldi carries an incredibly complex character on his shoulders and does it brilliantly—he’s simply mesmerizing.
The second season also leaves you kind of hanging. Again, not a cliffhanger, but the much-anticipated closure hasn’t arrived yet. Between us, I wouldn’t be surprised if it never comes, but oddly enough, despite the lack of resolution, I felt a sense of calm at the end. The good news is that the third and final season has already been filmed, so we’re expecting it sometime in 2025, possibly around this time again.
Also, it’s been a while since I’ve had so much fun with theories. The show’s content really makes you speculate and try to guess where it’s going in the third season. Obviously, we hope it doesn’t end clumsily and ruin the whole thing for us, but based on the writing I’ve seen so far, I’m generally optimistic.
