Self/Less
This movie is the second Ryan's movie I watched in a cinema, after RIPD. All my memories about it were really good. That's still an action movie, some science fiction and a little bit of reflexion around all of that.
I know that my girlfriend never saw it because her dad said it's really bad, and it was not really appreciated by my classmates when I was in a cinema school 😅
But now I have some duty !
That was needed to watch it so I did not give up ! I went through obstacles, sat down and launched it on Netflix !
Ben Kingsley is boring
He is just one of the people you never want to meet in your life. He is a business man, probably among the richest men of his city, he owns an old real estate company he created so he's a billionaire after building like half od Manhattan.
He has a golden suite in the last floors of his skyscraper. His daughter hates him because he never have been here for her and was only able to give her money but never his time.
He is a product and probably among the causes of the free capitalism like it is today. He takes his jet only to eat with a friend etc. I will not continue but, to be honest I hate hom, and suddenly when he becomes Ryan Reynolds by a Strange but cool process, he immediately became really cool. Changing his life, going out, making sports everyday, practicing basketball in the streets etc.
Considering this is a sort of science fiction story, this is probably the most strange part. The character did not really change except his body, but we were hating him 5 minutes before, and now he's handsome we are almost forced to like him.
There's something really strange, something we can see in this, RIPD and safe house. There are pretty often scenes that looks like flashbacks or time lapse, at least something showing briefly him having sex or only being with a half nude woman in his bed. Expect in Safe house and RIPD it's at the beginning of the movie. I don't know how his contracts looks but I'm almost sure there is a line written "Ryan Reynolds has to have sex in a bed". And this will happen in the next movie "Deadpool" too. But this time the cringe aspect will certainly not be the same at all.
Except that, the time lapses are pretty well made, even when it shows him multiplying his sex partners, the music and the change in the emotions along it are pretty pleasant and shows that this is a movie in the center between "making a good movie" and "Making a movie for the Ryan Reynold's teenagers fans which are not here to see Cinema With a big C"
And all the rest of the movie is totally following this because, exactly like RIPD, after he finds the woman in his dreams, the movie is at 80% gun fights. Even a weird scene With a flamethrower.
There's almost nothing to add except the end is pretty great. And I was personally pretty happy that Ben Kingsley sacrified to let Ryan Reynolds live in his own body.
