Selling Is A Social Game. How's Your Game?

Being a Shy Person…

You would never think that a shy person can be good at sales. Honestly selling is like everything else, you need to develop a set of skills to get good at it. Even if you are an introvert, you can still be a top salesperson.

I know the sleazy car salesperson from the 80s with a greasy mullet and a plaid suit trying to unload heaps of junk. If you listen to just a little bit of Zig Ziglar you will discover what sales really is.

What Selling is Not

There is a massive difference between being a great salesperson and spamming. Yes bugging your friends and relatives to get involved in something they have no interest in, is a form of spam. There are definitions of spam and some of them are lengthy. Very simply spamming is the art of cold calling, giving someone something they did not ask for.

Advertising on television and radio is a form of spam. For example, you are driving down the road enjoying the freedom listening to some great tunes on the radio, and bam out of nowhere “Do you have a leaky roof?” An advertisement is now ruining your good time.

Selling is not bugging people or dropping links everywhere without people asking for them.

What Selling Is

This is fantastic because selling is just a transference of emotions. Ever had an opinion about a movie you have yet to see? This is due to someone transferring their feelings about the film to you. Yes, this person does not need to be someone you know. Simply listening to a review of the movie might be enough to influence us.

This is why in previous articles I am just shouting about the importance of passion. If you are excited about something anything that feeds excitement is contagious. Just by you talking about how wonderful something is can result in a lot of sales. If a person is on fire about a subject they pick up followers like a corvette picks up speed.

If you are excited that excitement will transfer to other people, but the excitement has to be authentic. People can smell faked or canned emotions from a mile away and is a great way to repel people.

I Have Said This Before

You really need to know your audience. This is extremely crucial to success in sales. If you are trying to sell a car to a person trying to buy a laptop, then nobody is going to be happy. Making friends with everyone and having meaningful conversations with them is a must-do. This is such a simple thing that we have been doing since grade school.

Participation is important, and so is asking people not just how they are doing but also what are they working on. What is giving you a problem this week? How is the family? Is there anything I can do for you? Being genuinely interested in people is a prerequisite for being a successful salesperson.

Practice Makes Perfect

Before you pitch anything to anyone find out if they want it. Find out if they need it. Make it your mission to learn what it is they do need, or what is their biggest problem. If what you are offering does not fit them or their needs then do not even try this as it would be a perfect example of a family-sized SPAM loaf.

Make as many friends as you can. Try to talk to at least five different people every day, and really get to know them. Doing this over and over again daily will make talking to people over time become a part of your new comfort zone, but that is a post for another time. When I say talk I mean really talk to them.

Hey, How Are You? Once A Week is Crap!!

Chiming in once a week on someone's social feed or messenger app with a “how’s it going?” And nothing else is unacceptable. There are many people that claimed to be very social and still failed at internet marketing and I say to them that they did it wrong, very wrong. Yes, there is a wrong way to be social.

We can all open a conversation with hello, how are you? But then we really need to follow up with some meaningful questions and or statements depending on their response. This is not a canned rehearsed conversation with a script because people are all unique. Are they a family person, do they have hobbies, what do they do for a living, who are their friends, do they have pets, are they city or country people, are they sports fanatics, do they love what?

So much more, but the main purpose of this post is to get to know your subscribers, members, and followers, it will be well worth your time.

Very nice, Rob. Valid points to avoid being a spammer and being an actual marketer. Thanks for sharing.

I just picked up a piece of hardware last week that I have received countless emails from vendors trying to sell it to me. It wasn't until I went to a conference and saw one of my colleagues talk about it that it really clicked with me and I made the purchase before the session was even over. I found this post on Listnerds.

I love that story! Emails is good. Spoken word is to the moon! :)

You have a point there explaining the difference between selling and spamming. I hate cold calls from "Unavailable" sources. If you want to talk, then placing an anonymous display on my phone will get you nowhere.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice post, Rob. Like any other profession, you need a set of skills that can be honed with practice and patience.

Then there is the people on FB Messenger who use my Birthday wish to them as an invitation to ask me to watch a video about whatever program they happen to just have joined. That kind of stuff annoys me like crazy.
Selling is a skill and can be done without aggravating people.
We learned something about blocking sales calls for my Dad the other day.
He was using his answering machine because he is over 90. Setting up his voicemail on his spectrum account was nothing he wanted to deal with. So Saturday starting from like mid morning till we finally set up his voicemail and turned off his answering machine he got like 20 calls in a row telling him there was a fraudulent purchase on his Amazon account and to press 1 for this or 2 for that.
What we learned is that if an answering machine picks up they sense it as a person answering the phone and will keep calling
If you use voicemail you can set it up so they don't even get through.
Bam!
It works.

Yeah, I get those too Lisa. But what we don't want to do is indict those that engage properly and build know, like, and trust. We can't let the bad apples spoil the bunch. And when done correctly, there are tons of magic moments where everyone feels good about the process. Proper "selling" if you will, is an art. People don't stop driving when they see a bad driver, right? They just say, "What a bad driver!" lol :) Terrible how people prey on the elderly. Shameful! Kudos for protecting him.

Thanks, Rob! That is why we moved in with him. So that he could stay here in the house that he put 60+ years of his life into and be safe. Sorry for the rant. That stuff is a definite trigger for me. You are right. Selling can be done in away that is not slimy. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend. 😀

Thanks and have a great rest of your holiday weekend too. Congrats on the Pizza Plan! I just signed up. Sorry, late to the party. ;)

You're welcome, Rob! Thanks for signing up. Appreciate the support. I hear you have a launch coming up for the new Mailer. Best of luck! Have a great day! 😀

Thanks Lisa! Just put a new blog and nerds mail out about said launch. Just about 8 hours away.

You're welcome, Rob! I am kind of behind on verifying emails these last couple of days. Going to make up for that as much as possible today. Have a great day! 😀
