उत्तमा आत्मनः ख्याता पितुः ख्याताश्च मध्यमाः|
अधमा मातुलात् ख्याता स्वशुराश्चाधमाधमाः||
Uttamaa aatmanah khyaataa pituh khyaataashcha madhyamaah.
Adhamaa maatulaat khyaataa svashuraashchaadhaamaadhamaa.
Uttamaah = best, most elevated persons. Aatmanah = self.
Khyaataa = famous, well known.
Madhyamaah = medial, middle,
Adhamaa = lowest.
Maatulaat = due to one's maternal uncle.
Svashuraashchaadhamaadhamaah = Svashuraah + cha + adhamadhamaah. Svashurah = wife's father.
Cha = and.
Adhamaadhamaah = worst among the inferior.
The name and fame achieved by a person himself through his own efforts is the best one, and the fame achieved because of one's father is of middle category. Fame achieved through one's maternal uncle is of inferior category, but the fame achieved through one's father-in-law is the worst among the inferior.
