From our class monitor of a school to nation's prime minister, we often question their ability to lead their respective fields. In todays time, when corruption is at large, raising doubts on their ability to perform or lead is obvious. No person is complete in every aspect, so does a leader. There are many theory and definition going round about the quality of being a true ruler, so does in our Sanskrit world. Outlining all the qualities, which a ruler must have to rule over his country successfully is beautifully transcripted in following lines :
अप्रमत्तश्च यो राजा सर्वज्ञो विजितेन्द्रियः|
कृतज्ञो धर्मशीलश्च स राजा तिष्ठते चिरं||
Apramattashcha yo Raaja sarvagyo vijitendriyah.
krutagyo dharmasheelashcha sa Raaja tishthate chiram.
Apramatta = vigilant, considerate.
Yo = who.
Raaja = king
Sarvagyo = knowing every thing, omniscient.
Vijitendriyah = vijit + indriah.
Vijit = conquered.
Indriah = sensory organs.
Vijitendriah = a person who has control over his sensory organs and subdued his passion.
Krutagya = thankful, grateful.
Dharmasheelashcha = Dharmasheel + cha. Dharmasheel = pious and virtuous.
Sa = that.
Tishthate = stays in office, rules.
Chiram = for a long time.
A king (or a ruler of a Country), who is very considerate, vigilant, omniscient, has control over his sensory organs and subdued his passion, is grateful towards his subjects , pious and religious,successfully rules over his kingdom (country) for a long period.
Being considerate helps a leader by building strong, trusting relationships with their team members. While being vigilant helps a leader by allowing them to proactively identify potential threats or opportunities. An omniscient leader would be able to make highly informed decisions by having complete knowledge of every aspect of their organization. Each of the qualities have their say, in a leaders qualities.
It is rare to have a leader with all the qualities, but if we get one, it will be a boon in disguise. But in pursuit to power and fame leaders never bothered about their true responsibility.
