Milei causes a tidal wave in Spanish politics

The Argentine president always makes himself felt. When I checked the cables of the main agencies yesterday Thursday, the head of Balcarce 50 was grabbing the headlines, attending to the rhetorical and diplomatic pulse he holds with his peer in the Moncloa. While the cameraman who recorded his most recent interview reminds him that the salary does not make ends meet, the liberal leader continues in prophetic mode—in the next semester the macroeconomy will be reflected in the food table, he reaffirms—, blaming the previous administration and so playing the hero card—if it had not been for him, right now nine out of ten Argentines would be poor—, and stirring up diplomatic conflicts, for example calling the Spanish first lady "corrupt". For things like the latter, there is currently no Spanish ambassador in Buenos Aires, so that in view of his return to Europe, the PSOE government urges him to "be up to the task".

This Friday, the president of the autonomous community of Madrid intends to award the Argentine politician with the "International Medal of the Community of Madrid", a blatant provocation that reflects the growing tension between social democrats and conservatives, in which Milei has operated as agitator. Although in truth the bilateral crisis was triggered with greater force after a controversial representation of Javier Milei made by a member of the cabinet of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, with whom the Argentinean does not intend to meet on this new occasion either. The same dynamic applied in the case of Joe Biden.

The libertarian's narrative is that his trips and awards around the world help "to put Argentina on the map", have had practical effects—according to his self-assessment—in strategic processes such as the recent elections in "the old continent", and enhance him as promoter of big technological waves such as the advance of artificial intelligence. Yet I don't see how AI could be a sound deal for our cameraman.

The war against social organizations

A point to which Milei and his associated press has dedicated a lot of effort in these months is the denunciation of the main social organizations and leaders, who—always according to the government of La Libertad Avanza—would have extorted and defrauded millions of pesos destined to the most vulnerable during the past administration of Alberto Fernández. I do not rule out that these accusations against the so-called "poverty managers" are true, but what we do not see is a proposal from the current executive to attack the underlying problem, which is the situation of the lowest social classes. The organizations continue to respond strongly in the streets to the austerity policies, which in the last few days has resulted in several arrests and strong repression in general by the security forces.
