All 62 people aboard an ATR 72-500 turboprop were killed when it crashed in a town near Sao Paulo. The plane crash began to be reported early Friday afternoon, in news that puts the spotlight back on aviation safety in recent times. "I have to be the bearer of terrible news," said Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, asking for a minute of silence because of the tragedy.

Mulino makes a first wake-up call to Washington
The still recently-installed Panamanian government agreed with the Biden administration that the United States would cover the repatriation costs incurred by the Central American nation because of migrants irregularly crossing the Darien Gap. Still, apparently the White House has not delivered according to the deal so far. "The ball is in their court, we have done everything we can do", President José Raúl Mulino said, referring to the people inside the West Wing. Mulino has placed barbed wire—like a Latin American Greg Abbott—along the border to stem the flow of migrants from Colombia. These and other measures, including his aggressive rhetoric, appear to be behind the observed drop in irregular crossings during July, reported at around 34%.
The following is heading to nowhere.
"If that's the contribution, the sacrifice that Panama has to make, by offering our soil so that this man and his family can leave Venezuela, Panama would do it without a doubt," Mulino said in an interview."@Welpita @RedPolitologas https://t.co/lgRFhnhGoX

Who takes the bad part of the “deal”?
Migrant crossings at the US-Mexico border have plunged after President Biden enacted a ban on most asylum claims. But migrants and advocates tell me it has had a human cost.

AMLO keeps asking about Mayo Zambada
As I said the first time I commented on the U.S. arrest of powerful druglord "Mayo" Zambada last month, allegedly after being duped by the son of his one-time Sinaloa cartel partner "El Chapo" Guzman, U.S. federal agencies have made fools of their Mexican counterparts, who were kept completely out of the loop. This includes President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador himself, who more than two weeks later is still demanding that Washington explain how it all happened. "There is no cooperation on the part of the U.S. government in this case, that is, they have not given us enough information," he said today at his usual press conference.
