Meditation can be seen as a mental exercise for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness. Meditation can also be seen as an act of engagement in contemplation or reflection.
So meditation is actually when your mind shifts its spotlight away from your breath and you are lost in thought thereby finding calmness, peace, and balance. So in exence meditation is a good thing for our health because we experience the love, peace and stillness that is within ourselves.
It's benefits range from healing the body to reduction of stress and anxiety and finally leads to the calmness of the mind. Amidst these wonderful benefits of meditation, we as humans find it difficult to meditate for so many reasons.
I believe the major cause of the difficulty in meditation in our world today is the many sources of distractions around us. A lot of things keep us so busy that we barely have time for meditation. The internet and social media have a lot to get you carried away through the whole day. Also, the media have their role too. The bad news and the talk of war, here and there, has a big effect on one's sanity. Surely, it is only a sane and calm mind that would make time to meditate.
The same way technology has brought a lot of good things for us, so has it brought several negative things too. One of the main negative impacts of technology on our community today, is the enormous distractions. Man can barely have enough time for himself.
Aside from distraction, the act of meditation is no longer taught. The young generation know little about meditation. I believe this might be due to the so many responsibilities that lie on one's shoulders. The hustle and bustle of life has created no room for meditation. Most at times, we get stressed out that once we get home, sleep is the next thing. And the next day, we leave for work too. In other cases, one has to work extra hours just to meet up with the expenses of the family.
In essence, a lot of factors contribute to the decline in meditation. However, the most substantial factor, I believe, is the distraction around us. A lot can actually serve as a source of distraction: the internet, social media, work, family, media, and so on.
