And than there was the day we went to bring the flag lines we made in the church sewingclass. The assigment was simple, paper and plastic flag lines are not allowed anymore, both fire hazard wise and environmental so the cotton option remained.
But first things first. What are Ronald mc Donald homes?
Well as a mum with pre mature babies I never had to make use of the one we visited, but in a Ronald mc Donald home , dads and mums, brothers and sisters ( or other family ) of a seriously ill (high care and intensive care ) child who’s child has to be admitted to this Rotterdam academic hospital , well they can stay in a Ronald McDonald House for almost nothing. All expenses are paid.
Thanks to this accommodation attached to the hospital, parents are always at their child's hospital bed within a few minutes.
The house is on the side of the high care part of the hospital and with a special elevator and stairs they are so close. A very reassuring thought and a perfect way to get rest while taking care of your new born or child when it’s in a critical time of his or her life.
As a mum I think that is so good to have.
When you live in Rotterdam, you are not eligible. The criteria is you need to be living a certain amount of km from the hospital.
In the case of these critical sick kids a nessesity. Both need to be close to comfort, feed, love or to pouch.
Especially hart transplants for premature is a specialty here and
Than this is good because breast milk and pouching is most essential.
We had taken on the assigment to make flag lines for this home and maybe we will do the other ten aswell. The fact that we made them is ofcourse in a blog already.
Here is the link:
Here is wour way there. There are two entries on in the hospital where winny the Pooh is welcoming you, and on on the outside below the hospital. We took the entrance outside because it’s during the day and we respect the parents and because we don’t work here that’s protocol.
The parents entry.
A love bench , wonderful when the sun shines,
and next to a espresso bar.
The general entrance, and everybody knows Ronald, he is by the door welcoming you.
We went inside and presented the two lines of 20 meters for the livingroom and the family-play room. The manager was in an ahwww that we made it and that we came to bring it to the location.
We gave the box and we also put in a card.
They wanted to make a photo for the socials and I agreed because I was allowed to make pictures for this blog. So a win-win situation.
Here the board with the biggest contributers and sponsors.
After that we had tea and coffe and a tour.
The fact that it’s a hotel like organisation is great to see where all volunteers take away all the life tasks while parents have the worrries about the health of their mostly really small children.
The house has 200 volunteers and 15 people on the pay roll.
From the 200 people there are 30 for the playroom ( mostly for the care of the brothers and sisters ) and 170 volunteers to do all there is in life in shifts . Three shift possibilities a day. In 4 hour parts. Day and night.
24/7 and in 34 rooms.
Rooms have twin Ed’s and. Possible extra airbed or baby bed.
Per year approximately 1100 families stay at RMR, there are 12 rooms to chill or watch tv.
12 Ronald mc Donald homes in the Netherlands. And all full on a daily bases.
This is also the place where the two youngest sons were born. So for me a place with a lot of memories because
they both were premature aswell.
Healthy as they can be but had an early start in life.
There are stairs and elevators, it’s very neat and there is art everywhere in the walls. You can dine inside if you want for a few euros, you can borrow a bike , wheelchairs there is a possibility to get groceries from sponsors. All is so greatly orginised, and such a great cause that I want to look into a volunteer job maybe twice a month. I have to look into that some more, but I really was so surprised that it is such a big cause and so greatly managed.
We saw a nice card , I had to blurr the names but the message is that the two parent want to thank the personal and the volunteers and that their child after 4 months now is at home and doing well.
The building is in a ship build shape, love that because I just came of a ship !
Back through the Erasmus medical centre Rotterdam.
This day was one with a silver lining.
And the museum depot one of the icons we have in Rotterdam.
