Life, although I have discovered this time and time again, can throw us a curveball when we least expect it. We have to appreciate our loved ones and take nothing for granted.
Yesterday, @ zakludick was admitted to hospital with cellulitis. He wrote a post about his tumble a few weeks ago here Sea Point Promenade, Shoreline and the place I fell LOL. One of is "grazes" turned out to be a lot more serious than the rest, which healed fast and without much fuss.
Typically (and I can feel @zakludick's eyes rolling at me) he would not allow me to properly examine the wound on his leg that was showing signs of trouble.
Although it had formed a healthy-looking scab, there was something sinister brewing underneath - typically, with the surrounding edges of the wound being red and the stubbornness of the wound in not wanting to heal like the rest.
Having worked in a wound care center for three years where patients ignored this type of warning sign, and seeing the results, I was frustrated and worried.
Eventually, @zakludick 's annual leave came to an end and this meant he couldn't wander around in plakkies (flip flops) and shorts and was forced back into uniform which meant heavy-duty wear like jeans or overall pants. Obviously, this irritated the wound and started to release whatever was hiding there under the scab and waiting for an opportunity to spread.
A few days later, the pain was so bad that he finally allowed me to have a look. We soaked the wound in "saline" and got the scab off and did some debridement. I then dressed the wound but I'm afraid things only got worse from there. Opening it up gave the bacteria just what it wanted and it spread all over his leg, the original wound being the size of a coin.
He went to the Dr the following day and got booked off for the week, with strict instructions from the doctor that should his pain or infection margins worsen, he would need to come in immediately.
Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened and the redness and swelling were severe. He had also formed blisters which are a common sign of cellulitis, so I swished him of to the doctor, only to find out that the doctor was off for the day! We then consulted with another familiar doctor who basically told us to go straight to the hospital.
It was quite a wait, arriving at 3 pm and only getting home at 21h45, but they did take care of him and since the general ward was full (it was an extremely busy day for the ER, He managed to land himself a window-side bed with a gorgeous view of the mountain.
The best case scenario is that Dr will review his bloodwork etc and he will be kept for observation for another night or two or possibly even be sent home today. It all depends on what exactly is found to be the underlying cause if the cellulitis- the actual bug.
Please keep us in your thoughts <3
