Unlike other countries, Nigeria my country basically has just two weather conditions: Rainy season and Dry season. Then there's the harmattan period, which I like to call the ‘Winter of Nigeria’. This is when the weather is so cold, and you wake up to fog every morning.
During harmattan, you have to apply lip gloss or lip balm or else your lips will break, and it can be very painful. Then dress properly by wearing thick clothes and sweaters. Then you also have to moisturize properly because we all know harmattan causes dry flaky skin.
Now back to the question for the week. There are a few things I like to do during extremely hot periods or dry season.
Firstly, I make sure to apply sunscreen and use skincare products that have some sort of sun protection factor. I do this to protect my skin and lips from the intense radiation of the sun. Believe me when I say Nigerian hot can be very very very hot.
Secondly, I make sure I wear loose fitting attires and stay away from dark-colored clothes as they absorb heat and make you feel hotter. So bright-colored clothes and free clothes is my best dress code for heat period.
Another thing I do is to make sure I stay hydrated all the time. I drink lots of water and take cold showers, and it helps to keep my body cool. And when I'm indoors, I open all the windows to let air into the house if there is no electricity. But I always use an air-conditioning unit if there is electricity.
As for the rainy season when it's usually cold, I cover up properly with different layers of clothing to keep myself warm and cozy. Then I drink plenty of hot beverages and avoid any cold drink. I also ensure I stay hydrated to regulate my body temperature.
I discovered that lighting candles and closing doors also helps to warm up the house. Using scented candles not only gives the home a nice smell, it releases a little warmth. Furthermore, I bathe with hot water during cold weathers, so I do not catch a cold.
