Sunday Cathedral

It's Sunday and although I am not a church goer, it seems like it is appropriate to share these photos of Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago today.

Dedicated on November 21, 1875, Holy Name Cathedral replaced the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

You can see how the city has grown up around the cathedral in the past 150 years.

A cornerstone inscription still bears faint indications of bullet marks from the murder of North Side Gang member Hymie Weiss who was killed in front of the church in 1926.

Visiting on a weekday was the perfect time to appreciate the architectural beauty and historical significance.

The interior is beautiful, grand, and a sanctuary from the busy world that is happening just outside it's doors. The gorgeous wood and lovely stained glass windows are worth a visit to see.

Beautiful photos as always, capturing the beauty through the lens. Chicago looks like a wonderful blend of cultures and traditions; I would love to visit it someday. Without a doubt, the cathedral is stunning and reminds me a bit of some in Havana. Keep sharing these beautiful places with us!

Wow, wow and wow! What a beautiful church! I have always wanted to visit one like this, but where I am at, there aren't any this ornate. Did you call out to see how the echo effect was, or were there too many people around? I bet the acoustics are awesome!

A beautiful Catholic Church!
Thank you for showing us. I've been to Chicago twice, but not on a Sunday, so I never saw a Catholic Church. The interior is like our parish church, with all the stained-glass windows.

absolutely beautiful. I am not terribly religious myself, but there is something undeniably beautiful about old churches. I had the privilege of going to visit the Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland in the early 2000s. What an indescribable experience

Design in architecture, wood carvings, lead glass windows always pleasing to the eye.

Built with pride to a point where all around now may tower above, in bygone days either church or castle normally took highest, most dominant spot in town.

What a beautiful cathedral! It's always so bizarre to see them amongst the tall skyscrapers that surround them today. The stained glass and arches inside are gorgeous!
