During the season, the local produce farm that is south of town grows many fresh fruits and vegetables that are sold at their farm store and at a few roadside stands around the area. This year they have also planted sunflowers and for a fee you can walk the paths through the sunflower fields.
Sunflowers are annuals and come in tons of different sizes and colors. They are native to North America and are one of the easiest flowers to grow.
Sunflowers can be categorized into three groups: tall, dwarf, and colored. These photos are a few of the many varieties that were growing along the trails.
Tall sunflower varieties can grow up to 15 feet tall, and one record breaking giant measured at 30 feet and 1 inch tall!. Dwarf sunflower types only grow to be about 3 feet tall and are perfect for growing in pots. Hybrid Sunflowers also come in a variety of colors.
Sunflowers love the summer heat and need full-sun. In fact, sunflowers love the sunshine so much that they’re known for heliotropism, which means the plants move throughout the day so that they’re always facing the sun.
