Ubang, a community in the Obudu local government area of Cross River, Nigeria, is one historical place that people need to visit. I first learned about this place in a school magazine while I was still at the university. I was surprised when I read about it because my mom is from that local government area. I called her to confirm what I read, and in 2018, when I visited the village for Christmas, I asked my cousin to take me to that community because I needed to feed my curiosity.
Ubang is a community where men and women speak different languages. The men speak the Ofe language, while the women speak the Araseke language. It sounds strange, right? Yes, that was how I felt at first, and I had to visit the community myself. I was shocked and fascinated at the same time. I had to ask a few people around the community how they get to understand themselves, and they said that is how God created them. They just understand what the other gender is saying but can't speak the other gender's language; it's abnormal and a taboo, but that's not all about the community.
There's a gigantic footprint on a rock also in the village; the ubang people so much believe that that's the footprint of God, that when God landed on earth, His plan was to give every ethnic group two languages, but after He gave them, God realized that the languages wouldn't go round, so He gave one to others. This information has been passed down from generation to generation. They feel so blessed and loved by God. I once heard that a scientist visited there but couldn't decipher the mystery behind the footprint. The Ubang people have also refused to allow anyone to do anything to the rock because they believe it's their heritage.
