A Good Intentioned Infiltration
The next day Amani didn’t get up quite as early. When she came out, she seemed a little irritable. This was new to the fruits and vegetables, who had never seen her be anything but happy. She worked off in the distance for a little while until finally she came over and greeted the bunch.
“Hey guys, sorry I’m feeling a little off today,” She said. “Sometimes life can be overwhelming, y’know?”
She observed the Peppers and Blueberries and the Blackberries and Carrots.
“Nothing new, huh?”
She tried to nudge them a little closer. She moved the Mint next to the Blackberries and Carrots. She thought about it and decided it was a good stopping point, which was odd because she had only been out in the garden for an hour. Usually she was out for most of the day.
The fruits and vegetables were all concerned, but there was nothing they could do…until night, of course.
Each group dropped to the ground as their day began, signaled by the glowy blue fog of the twilight garden. Everyone met in the middle of the patch once again.
“Alright, does everyone know their places?” Mento asked.
Everyone nodded.
Mento continued, “Alright, for the sake of not messing this plan up, let’s go over it again…”
They had been talking about this all day, realizing that Amani’s current strategy wasn’t working. The Peppers and Blueberries couldn’t get along and it was very apparent the Blackberries hadn't taken a liking for the Carrots. So while Amani had been inside for most of the day, they had hatched a plan. They were going to do what no one had done before. They were going inside the house.
“Blackberries, because of your skill in crafting weaponry, you’ll build catapults that’ll launch the Blueberries up to the window, since they’re the lightest of us. Blueberries, I’ve seen you all tie knots in your traps before, so you’ll have rope with you to tie around whatever you can once you’re up. Then once the ropes are dropped down, the rest of us will climb up. Together, we’ll push open that window, and if we’re not strong enough, Carrots will be carrying some farmer tools to smash it open-”
“Whoa, won’t that wake Amani up?” Boro asked.
“Well, I suppose that’s a good point. Either way, the Carrots, Blackberries and Blueberries will keep a lookout once we're inside while the Peppers, Mentă and I will find her journal to draw and write more ideas that might work,” Mento concluded. “Now let’s get prepared and meet at the window in an hour.”
An hour of prepping ensued and they all met at the appointed time, except for the Blueberries who lost track of time. Twenty minutes late, they arrived, but it wasn’t much of a surprise to anyone there.
“Let’s go, boys, you’re up first!” Mento informed them.
The boys threw on some leaf helmets and sat on the catapults prepared by the Blackberries.
“Hey do us a favor and count dow-AGHGHHHHHHHHHHHH,” the boys screamed as the Blackberries immediately launched them into the air. For a moment they were terrified, then enjoying it, and then in pain as they landed face-first on the window sill.
“You boys ok?” Mento called up.
For a moment there was no response.
“OOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW!” Borův announced.
Boro laughed at Borův as he stood up and several teeth fell out. Borův punched him in the shoulder, but in a moment’s realization looked down at Braam, who was shaking his head.
“Heck,” he said. “Sorry.”
“It’s all good,” Boro responded.
The boys tied their ropes around some nail heads that were sticking out of the windowsill and threw them down. Everyone quickly ascended and reached the window sill.
“Good job guys! Now everyone, let’s push this thing up!” Mento declared.
Everyone lined up and pulled as the window ascended.
“Awwww,” Curran said. “I wanted to smash it.”
“Sorry, buddy,” Cenoria responded.
Everyone grabbed the ropes and moved them to the opposite side of the window, lowering themselves down.
“Alright, you guys remember the rest,” Mento said.
The Blackberries, Carrots and Blueberries spread out, as they kept an eye out for anything moving.
Mento realized he hadn’t thought this far ahead, because now he had no idea where to look for the journal. They began searching, climbing up to the counters and tables arranged around the house. They looked in drawers and cabinets and anything they could think of, to no avail.
“I know you didn’t bring us in here not knowing where that journal is,” Pim stated.
Mento gave a sigh. “Yes I don’t know where it is, but we’ll find it, I promise you.”
The Pepper girls moaned in frustration.
“Hey, Mento is trying his hardest to figure all of this out, and your whining does nothing but make the situation more difficult!” Mentă told the girls.
“Hey, it’s ok, darling,” Mento told her.
This only furthered the Pepper’s frustrations.
“You know, as I am a leader of the garden, you shouldn’t be talking to me like that!” Pim barked.
“Oh, boy,” Mento sighed.
“Leader of the garden??!!!!” Mentă responded. “You girls are some of the sorriest excuses of people I’ve ever met! We have stuck our necks out for you for so long, and this is how you talk to us?! Don’t come to us when everyone turns on you guys one of these days, because trust me, they will!”
“Ok darling, I think that’s enough,” Mento said, moving her to the side.
Pimenta had more to say, but her sisters held her back. She broke her sisters’ grip, however, and moved closer to Mentă. As she was about to yell in her face, she was suddenly knocked upside the head and fell unconscious to the floor.
Shocked, everyone looked up to see a surprise figure standing in front of them.
“Zekka?”
Gato
Mento immediately grabbed Zekka for a hug and, surprisingly, she didn't fight it, though she didn't exactly hug him back.
“Zekka, where have you been?” Mentă asked her.
“Here,” she replied over her shoulder. “Why are you here?”
“We're trying to help Amani with something,” Mento informed her.
“I've been helping Amani, too,” she told them. “I kill bugs and pests that come inside.”
Mento and Mentă were not relieved to hear she hadn't given up violence, but the relief in seeing their daughter was more important. Mentă went up to Zekka and hugged her as well.
“Hey, you've been hanging out inside?” Mento realized. “Would you happen to know where her journal is?”
“Yeah, it's in her room, on her nightstand,” she responded.
“Um, I'm sorry to interrupt a touching moment or something but our sister is face down on the floor!” Piperra blurted out.
“Babies,” Zekka said. She gave an almost imperceptible smirk, but her parents knew they saw it, and it made them snicker - though guiltily.
“Zekka, would you help Piperra get Pimenta down from here?” Mento asked. “And Pip, would you come with us?”
“Sure,” Pip answered.
They ran a short distance but Mento suddenly stopped and turned towards Zekka, “Please come home, Zekka. Your mother and I miss you.” He turned and continued with Pip and his wife.
The group lowered themselves off the table and motioned the Carrots to them.
Whispering, Mento told them, “Start getting some of the families out of here, we'll be back soon.”
The Carrots nodded and ran off.
Mento, his wife and Pip ran to Amani's room, where the door was creaked open enough for them to squeeze through. They moved quietly through the room and reached her stand, where they climbed up and opened her journal to a blank page.
“Ok Pip, you draw and Mentă and I will write.”
They each grabbed a pencil and got to work. Pip broke off the tip and used it to write instead of the big heavy pencil, while Mento and Menta both held up their pencil. They drew and wrote and drew some more until finally, they finished. They closed the journal, lowered themselves and ran for the door, but something stood in front of them.
“Oh, I didn't know she had a cat,” Mento nervously whispered.
The white furball of a creature knelt down and was about to pounce when Mento pulled the girls to the side right as it leapt. They ran with all of their might out of that room and towards the window. They yelled for the others still inside to run. The Blueberries and Zekka with the rest of the Peppers were already out, fortunately, but everyone else was still making their way. The cat pursued as everyone scattered.
“What do we do??!!!” Curran called out as he ran up next to Mento.
“I'll keep running this way and hope it follows me while you take Pip and my wife towards the window!” Mento exclaimed.
“But your back, honey!” Mentă cried out. “You can't run that long!”
“I'll be fine!” Mento yelled back.
Curran took Pip and Mentă at Mento's request as he continued forward. Fortunately, the cat followed. Everyone continued through the window.
“Why aren't we..” Brómber had the same look as before, ”... you know!” His eyes gleamed with violence.
“We can't kill it!” Björnbär responded. “It's Amani's cat!”
Brómber frustratedly took the rope and climbed.
Meanwhile, Mento continued to run, heart pounding, trying to think of ways to outmaneuver the cat. He ran behind the couch for a moment, trying to catch his breath.
“Oh boy, what have I gotten myself into?”
He peered out to see the cat quickly approaching. Before he could run, however, a distance away, a vine of some sort was thrown around Amani’s cat's neck as a figure swung around onto the head of the cat.
“MOOOWWWWWWW!” The figure cried out.
“Oh you’ve gotta be kidding me,” Mento responded.
Munt was an interesting cat, almost as interesting as his rider, Bláber. What he had just wrapped around Amani’s cat was Munt’s personal stash of catnip. Amani’s cat began to rub itself against the floor and laid down, completely distracted by the effects of the catnip. Bláber and Munt slid down its head and into Mento’s arms.
“I have no words,” Mento responded. Munt snuggled up into his arms as Bláber hopped off.
“That cat sure makes for a fun ride,” Bláber chortled. He petted Munt behind the ears, who responded with a happy chirp.
The group started towards the rope, itching to get out of there. As they approached the base, Mento put the cat around his shoulders like a scarf, and climbed up. Waiting for him at the top, was Curran and Mentă who both gave him a hand.
“Thank goodness you’re ok!” Mentă stated. “Wait, what is Munt doing here?”
“Heck if I know,” Mento replied. “But I don’t really care at this point.”
They lowered into the group of fruits and vegetables below.
Everyone cheered.
“Ow, my head,” Pimenta said as she got up. “What happened?”
“There was a cat that knocked you out,” Pip said to her sister, keeping the focus off Zekka for now.
“Hey, food for everyone at our stand!” Curran announced.
"We Blackberries are fine - we need nothing from your stand,” Björnbär replied.
“But you don’t want to try our new meaty-flavored greens??” Curran asked.
Björnbär raised an eyebrow. “That does sound…enticing.”
“That’s the spirit!”
Curran had spotted a jar of beef seasoning on Amani’s kitchen island that looked alluring, so yes, he stole some and yes, the Blackberries had a wonderful meal that day with everyone else. For the second time, a Blackberry found someone of another clan potentially worthy of their time. It was a very good day.
