“Ewww!” The blueberries cried out and laughed as they walked by the Mint couple.
“Yeah, get a room, you two!” Boro called out.
“Ha ha, yeah! It's funny because they're kissing!” Bláber shouted.
The other two berries sighed. He wasn't the brightest of the boys, but he was their brother, and he was loved.
The group of blueberries continued walking in their ragtag formation, kicking up pebbles and dust clouds as they progressed.
“Where are we going?” Boro asked Borůvka, the oldest.
“I was thinking of heading to the creek and taking a dip!” he responded. “We could play pirates while we’re at it.”
The boys nodded their heads in agreement and raced towards the creek, shouting in their best pirate voices.
The Blueberries were your classic playful brothers who did everything together and lived for fun. Everyone in the Garden agreed they were a bit obnoxious and childish as can be, but many also admitted that they loved their innocence and protected it fiercely. Well, except the Peppers, who couldn't care less about childlike wonder and imagination.
The Blueberry Boys poked fun at each person in the garden, but none more than the Peppers. Their snobbiness constantly got on young boys’ nerves, which often got them into numerous petty arguments. To be fair, they argued with lots of people all the time; not only with the other fruits and vegetables, but also with each other.
Their biggest fights often included their brother Myrtille, who would always get them into heaps of trouble. You see, all of the brothers were pranksters, each committing to a prank at least once a week. Borůvka, Boro and Bláber’s pranks were always harmless, only causing minor frustrations among the garden. Myrtille, however, was a different story.
Borůvka once replaced everyone’s drinks at a gathering with salt water. Myrtille, on the other hand, once managed to turn on the hose and flood the creek, and then eventually everyone’s homes. Boro once spent the day shooting spitballs at anyone walking by. Myrtille pushed a rock three times his size down a slope that, once again, destroyed several homes. Bláber well… wasn’t the brightest, so his idea of a prank was sticking his tongue out at the Blackberries, which did however get him a swift swat from his brothers. Myrtille once provoked some rats to stampede in the direction of the houses in the garden and, as you guessed, destroyed them.
He was the most hardcore of hardcore pranksters and loved aggravating anyone he could. This is what led to the eventual conflict between the brothers one fateful evening.
The boys were playing with makeshift cards, trying to come up with new games. Amani often had friends over to hang out and play games with, which the boys observed. As they believed they finally got a rhythm down to a game that she called “Uno,” Myrtille came running up and swiped the cards away.
“Ha ha ha! Oh, wow the look on your faces- it's priceless!” He doubled over in laughter.
The boys were furious. Yes, pranks were their thing, but their brotherly bond was sacred ground, not to be trampled over with infighting. This was not the first time Myrtille had messed with them.
“YOU SUCK!!!!” Borův yelled. He quickly stood up and whacked his palm across Myrtille’s face.
Myrtille stumbled onto the ground somewhat stunned but also defiant. He stood back up as Borův put his fists up. Without hesitation, Myrtille ran into him, knocking him to the ground. The other two boys just stood back, unsure of what to do. Myrtille and Borův went back and forth for a little while, hitting and bashing.
Finally, Myrtille got on top of Borův, and began choking him.
“Myrtille!” The other two boys yelled and then pushed him off with all of their might.
Some tears strolled down Borův’s pale face as he stood up. “Go away, Myrtille! You always fight with us and get us in trouble! We don’t want you here!”
Myrtille grimaced, disgusted by his brothers. “You guys are just... you're nothing but.... " Myrtille thought of the worst curse word he could think of "... rotten squashes!” He stomped a juicy blueberry trail, as he walked away.
The boys all gasped! They had heard Amani say it before, but they never thought their own brother would curse at them this way. They sat there for a little bit, not really sure of what to do next. Truthfully, they loved their brother, but any love at this point was covered by indignation.
“I hate him,” Borůvka finally blurted out. The other two just shrugged, not wanting to fully commit to any contempt.
“He’s still our brother,” Boro said.
“I don’t care. He doesn’t act like it. He doesn’t even know the meaning of family!
You guys??? YOU are my family!!! But him? BAH!!!” Borůvka responded.
It had been a couple of weeks since then, and Myrtille had been absent in that time, just like Bżar and Zekka. Underneath that frustration grew a tinge of worry from Borův, though he wouldn’t tell that to his brothers. After another long day of playing pirates, they slumped onto the shore of the creek and lay there until they fell asleep. Not Borův, though. His mind raced and his worry grew. He couldn’t express any of it to his brothers, however, because in his mind he was supposed to be a leader. How would they see him as a leader if they saw him scared?
In an instant, a plan formed in his mind. Maybe, he could talk to the ones who knew best about brotherhood- the Blackberries. If they could just give him some advice on how to deal with conflict, he would better grow in how to be a leader.
‘Yeah,’ he thought to himself. The other two lay in a dead sleep. This was his perfect chance. Borův got up and began on his path to the Blackberry hut.
