Remembering "Megaforce" (1982) + Recordando Megaforce [Eng+Spa]

There are childhood memories that fade with time, but there are some memories that resurface after a while. The same thing often happens with movies. Today I wanted to share about a movie from the 1980s, which for many friends is already talking about retro history (personal smile). That era had several films that marked the development of the seventh art, and some of them gave rise to sagas that continued for decades, there are even some whose continuations continued to be produced until our current century. But, not all the films that were screened had this luck, or rather, they did not attract enough audiences to get the companies interested in making continuations.

For whatever reason (luck, talent, cosmic conjunction, or whatever), this particular film did not have the sequels (that are said) that were planned to expand its story and its universe. And, although I enjoyed the film at the time, I understand well what happened to it.

Part of the premise of the film is about a supranational armed organization, a phantom force that is not directly subordinate to any country. This already sounds a bit dangerous, or like a mercenary armed contractor of our time. This group, called Megaforce, enjoys sufficient resources and technological products that place them above other military forces.

From a secret base with advanced (for the time) laboratories, creative and unleashed scientific minds (albeit with a fun touch of creative madness in the script), experienced fighters, and combat vehicles that rivaled those of the legendary British agent 007. This movie had all of that, adding to a very period aesthetic.

I found several of the technologies in the movie very striking. They had vehicles that could change the color of their paint for day or night camouflage, motorcycles with missile launchers, and the ability to knock out tanks (without giving up the maneuverability or speed of motorcycles). But even at my young age (for that time), I found that they had exaggerated in some parts and the ridiculousness had made me unable to fall in love with the movie.

Seriously, even though I was very young, and a fan of 007 gadgets and the like. The key scene that threw me off, and (to this day) makes me feel like the producers and director of the film (intentionally) sought to ridicule the main character, is the scene (near the end) of the escape on a flying motorcycle… No joke, his motorcycle flies. Although it is said to be an untested prototype, the short flight part, and the turns in the air made me laugh, but I almost immediately felt that it was ridiculous.

If you have a nostalgic taste, or you want to laugh a bit with a retro movie, with special effects that today seem very rudimentary, and with several interesting underlying points, I recommend it to you.

By the way, despite the ridiculousness that I mentioned, there are some things in the plot of the movie that can be quite serious (even in light of today). This part is already a spoiler, but at the end of the movie one finds out that after Megaforce managed to reduce the military force of a very aggressive country, and with that saved its neighboring country. It turns out that the country that called them abandons them, closes its border so that they are trapped in the hands of their enemies, and pushes them to die. That makes Megaforce have to abandon their vehicles and equipment, escaping in a single plane, and managing to get out alive by pure luck. End of Spoiler. This idea of ​​a government abandoning soldiers after using them, the theme of the ‘need’ for a ‘world police’ type force, the idea that a mercenary force can serve as a guarantor of peace or be a threat to peace (because the villain of the film turns out to be a former colleague of Megaforce), and the problems of sexism and discrimination. All of these things are present in the film, although some of them are not expressed openly, they are outlined enough for one to notice.

Hay recuerdo de la infancia que se desdibujan con el tiempo, pero hay algunos que vuelven a la superficie luego de un tiempo. Con las películas suele suceder lo mismo. Hoy quería compartir sobre una película de la década de 1980, que para bastantes amigos ya es hablar de historia retro (sonrisa personal). Esa época tuvo varias películas que marcaron el desarrollo del séptimo arte, y algunas de ellas dieron origen a sagas que continuaron por décadas, incluso hay algunas cuyas continuaciones siguieron produciéndose hasta nuestro actual siglo XX. Pero, no todas las películas que se proyectaron tuvieron esta suerte, o más bien, no arrastraron suficiente público como para lograr que las compañías se interesaran en hacer continuaciones.

Sea por el motivo que fuera (suerte, talento, conjunción cósmica, o lo que fuera), está película en particular no tuvo las secuelas (que se comenta) que se tenían previstas para ampliar su historia y su universo. Y, aunque disfruté la película en su época, entiendo bien lo que le pasó.

Parte de la premisa de la película trata de una organización armada supranacional, una fuerza fantasma que no está directamente supeditada a ningún país. Esto ya suena un poco peligroso, o como una contratista armada mercenaria de nuestro tiempo. Este grupo, llamado Megaforce, goza de recursos suficientes y de productos tecnológicos que los colocan por encima de otras fuerzas militares.

Desde una base secreta con laboratorios avanzados (para la época), mentes científicas creativas y desatadas (aunque con un divertido toque de locura creativa en el guion), combatientes experimentados, y vehículos de combate que rivalizaban con los del legendario agente británico 007. Esta película tenía todo eso, sumando a una estética muy de la época.

Varias de las tecnologías de la película las encontré muy llamativas. Tenían vehículos que podían cambiar el color de su pintura para camuflaje diurno o nocturno, motocicletas con lanzaderas de misiles y capacidad de dejar fuera de combate a tanques (sin renunciar a la maniobrabilidad o velocidad de las motos). Pero incluso con mi corta edad (para esa época), encontré que habían exagerado en unas partes y el ridículo había hecho que no pudiera enamorarme de la película.

Seriamente, incluso siendo yo muy joven, y siendo fanático de los gadgets de 007 y cosas parecidas, la escena clave que me sacó de sitio, y (hasta el sol de hoy) me hace sentir que los productores y el director de la película (intencionalmente) buscaron ridiculizar al personaje protagonista, es la escena (casi al final) del escape en moto voladora… No es broma, su moto vuela. Aunque se dice que es un prototipo que no se había probado, la parte del corto vuelo, y los giros en el aire me hicieron reír, pero casi de inmediato sentí que era ridículo.

Si tienes un gusto nostálgico, o quieres reírte un rato con una película retro, con efectos especiales que hoy en día nos parecen muy rudimentarios, y con varios puntos subyacentes interesantes, te la recomiendo.

Por cierto, a pesar del ridículo que menciono, hay algunas cosas en la trama de la película que pueden ser bastante seria (incluso a la luz de la actualidad). Esta parte ya es spoiler, pero es que al final de la película uno se entera que luego de que Megaforce logró reducir la fuerza militar de un país muy agresivo, y con eso salvó a su país vecino, resulta que el país que los llamó los abandona, cierra su frontera para que queden atrapados en manos de sus enemigos, y los empujan a morir. Eso hace que Megaforce tuvo que abandonar sus vehículos y equipos, escapando en un solo avión, y logrando salir vivos por pura suerte. Fin del Spoiler. Esta idea de que un gobierno abandona a los soldados luego de usarlos, el tema de la ‘necesidad’ de una fuerza tipo ‘policía mundial’, la idea de que una fuerza mercenaria puede servir de garante de la paz o ser una amenaza para la paz (porque el villano de la película resulta ser un anterior colega de Megaforce), y los problemas de sexismo y discriminación. Todas estas cosas están presentes en la película, aunque parte de ellas no se expresan abiertamente, están lo suficientemente perfiladas como para que uno las note.
