If you are on Hive for a while, you are probably already aware of the Hive Alive Untrending report. However, if you are new to Hive you might not know about it and wonder what it is all about. Most people only look at the most trending posts and see the huge upvotes and think everything is great and how one day we might get on there too.
However, part of Hive is also downvoting, where people downvote content for any such reason and this will then remove the rewards for those posts in the reward pool.
You can access the Untrending report here:
https://hivealive.io/untrending
It gives you a wealth of information about the distribution of downvotes on Hive and you can check out some of this information yourself. I am usually having a look once a week to see who is being downvoted, by whom and then check some individual posts to ascertain why that might be.
Of course in a decentralised world, the reasons can be many, but one of the main reasons is to keep spam away from our posts on Hive. This is one of the best things I like about Hive, that we don't have a constant barrage of scammers posting fraudulent airdrop links with a shiny blue tick next to their name on us.
The community usually reacts quickly to downvote these scammers so their reputation is lowered and communities will mute their posts and comments to prevent them doing harm.
On the Untrending report, you can see who are the biggest downvoters, who gets downvoted the most and then there is a special section for people late downvoting people.
This is some useful information to see how much the downvotes are worth etc, but it doesn't help you see all the details about what the post being downvoted is and therefore you need to scroll down and then you can see the list of posts that have been downvoted. You can then sort them by the fields available.
Some things to check are how much of the rewards are reduced because some downvotes may be to try and do something called equalising rewards where the downvoter may think the post is overrewarded or perhaps the person might be farming Hive for rewards and they think it is too much.
If you see a post that you want to know more about why it is downvoted, you can then click the arrow under Link to Comment and this will take you to the post being downvoted.
Once there, you will see a message that shows that the content got a low rating by people as a warning and would be muted in most communities. If you then scroll further, you can then review the content and maybe check if there are any comments. This would then maybe give you an idea why the post might have been downvoted.
In this one post I checked, I could see that the Hivewatchers had left a message about plagiarism and had then downloaded this author to remove their rewards from this content. Quite often you will see posts being downvoted by Hivewatchers as they are looking to guard the reward pool from plagiarism and spam.
In other cases, it may not be so clear and you need to read between the lines or there has been a dispute between somebody. This is afterall a social network, but people are not always social with one another, even on Hive, which has a really great community.
The report that I looked at today was showing downvotes of $772 HBD, which was 0,7% of the reward pool. I guess this means that there isn't really alot of downvoting going on on Hive and therefore reading the Untrending report doesn't take too much time and you can quickly get an overview of what is untrending.
Have you used the Untrending Report? Did you find any useful information there? Let me know in the comments.
