What's the world coming to?

It's not every day that I discuss what I read in the media, but this is shocking and I want to voice my opinion about it.

Just to be clear from the beginning, I'm not a TikTok user, have never been and most likely will never be one, but looks like it's inevitable to come across some news about this platform these days. Today I was looking at my feed on X and came across an article by the BC that was shocking to say the least.

The case is not new, it happened in 2022, but regardless, it should never be forgotten.

This is a snippet of the article that shocked me and made me think of what kind of world we are living in and how can things like this happen in the 21st century.

A TikTok executive has said data being sought by a group of parents who believe their children died while attempting a trend they saw on the platform may have been removed.

They are suing TikTok and its parent company Bytedance over the deaths of Isaac Kenevan, Archie Battersbee, Julian "Jools" Sweeney and Maia Walsh - all aged between 12 and 14.

The lawsuit claims the children died trying the "blackout challenge", in which a person intentionally deprives themselves of oxygen. source

First of all, I can't even begin to imagine what those poor parents are going though, even after 2 years as the pain caused by the loss of a child never goes away, not even after decades. You can live a 100 years and still feel the devastating feeling every single day.

After such a tragedy, I see parents are trying to seek justice in court. I can understand the act because if the platform helped or contributed in any way to these tragic acts to happen, severe measures must be taken to stop further tragedy to happen. Most likely it will give parents some relief, even though it's not going to bring back their children, unfortunately.

Before I go any further, please note, I'm not blaming anyone, but I can't stop thinking, how the hell can such thing happen. It was a blackout challenge, in which a person intentionally deprives themselves of oxygen and all four were 12 and 14 years old.

You must know that most of the products, toys are sold in punctured plastic bags and most of the bags have warnings against suffocation written on them, to avoid exactly these situations. Yet here there were teenagers challenging themselves, playing with fire. The article and the lawsuit mentions four teenagers, but who knows, maybe there were more (in other occasions) and we just don't know about them.

Now comes the question, what pushes them to commit such reckless acts and put their life in danger? I've seen people falling down cliffs, hit by a train, electrocuted, eaten/killed by bears while trying to take a selfie in dangerous situations, to show the world how brave they are.

It is extremely sad to see how much showing off means for some these days. So many are living to fit the mood and the expectation of others and their happiness depends heavily on the likes and/or comments they get on social media platforms.

How do you recover from such an addiction? Do they even realize they are addicted?

Not long ago I spoke to a friend of mine, who has a 9 year old boy, who attended a ski camp for kids his age, during the winter holiday. Getting away from parents at his age is a real event worth celebrating, we all know that, but this camp was not what you think it was. The first thing the supervisors did was collect their cellphones, tablets and what electronic gadgets they had in a bag and put it in a safety box. They were allowed to use them once a day for limited time, to call their parents as well and that was all. They spent most of the time training and playing board games and other fun games, which didn't involve the use of an electronic device, but involved them all.

Many schools are starting to ban cellphone use during school hours, a measure that is met with mixed feelings by parents. It's not easy to control what your kids can or can't access on the internet and you can't isolate them from technology either, but it has to be a healthy balance, mental stability, if you want a happy and balanced kid and avoid such tragedy.

Sort:

That's really terrible news, I can't imagine how their parents are feeling.
Honestly it's hard to blame tiktok for their death and at thesame time you can but the truth is those kids weren't forced to be a part of the challenge. It's so sad that everyone wants to trend and sometimes they do for the wrong reasons and some even end up losing their lives in the process.
I honestly feel so sad for their parents 😞

Yes, it is true that kids were not forced to participate, but it is also true that such life threatening challenges should not have a place on any online platform. If you take a step back and look at it strictly from legal perspective, this qualifies as contributing to homicide.

Studies are starting to show that social media and cellphones are damaging the mental health of younger kids and even adults. I think it is time for everyone to start taking a good hard look at this for our own future well being.

was shocking to say the least

I agree. Social pressure on kids to encourage risky behaviours is really scary. I'm glad to see society starting to back off a little from allowing kids full access all the time but its always hard to pull back once you go there. It will be difficult to put the genie back in the bottle.

Some countries are taking some serious measures in this regards, which are met with mixed feelings. Some parents are ok with it and welcome it, while others screaming about excessive control, but the truth is, there has to be some limit to this and kids need to be protected as this madness is getting out of hand.

It will be difficult to put the genie back in the bottle.

You are right about that. Difficult, or even impossible.

I can’t imagine how the parents are feeling. Loosing a loved one is really terrible. The pain never goes away. I just hope they get justice that would make them feel relieved a bit. Sometimes I come across most of these Tiktok challenges are I wonder how people would do things that are so scary and dangerous. They take risk, that are life threatening and say they are doing it just for content and views. It is really scary what the world is slowly turning into.

Sometimes we need a break from our phones not just for kids but also adults for our mental health.

Children really shouldn't have access to social networks until they are at least 18 years old and to the Internet only under the supervision of parents and teachers for school matters... virtual visits, book consultations and so on. That's my opinion. But we already know that the world is going at this unhealthy pace and it is creating serious health problems in children and there is this danger that you are telling us about. How sad that these things happen... I can imagine how devastated those families are.

I don't know if 18 is the right age limit, but there has to be some limits. The problem is, many platforms, that are asking for age verification have only one click measure and the responsibility lies with those applying or registering, so ... it's like non existent actually. You click I am 18 and the platform than blaming you for cheating.

Parents are busy most of the times and many have no idea what their kids are doing most of the times.

It's a really delicate matter and hard to find a balance, but something must be done.

I remember that story, how sad for the families. Those types of things are something that most kids would never dream up on their own, so I hold the media company responsible for presenting the information, but ultimately, the choice belonged to the child. We all know that young teens make foolish decisions (and sometimes adults as well) and peer pressure is hard to resist for many.

I can't even begin to put myself in the parent's place. After the devastation wore off, the fury would set in. Most likely I would have been in prison by now. Sad state of the world we're living in.

Those types of things are something that most kids would never dream up on their own

This is true and it is why these life endangering trends or challenges needs to be blocked. Any online platform has a huge responsibility in this regard, but they are not the only responsible parties.

It is sad to see that kids aged between 12 and 14 are still capable of such foolishness.

I have heard of many such examples of children who have died or suffered serious injuries as a result of such challenges. Beyond the fault of the parents who cannot or are not interested in what their children are doing, I find that the main fault lies with the social network that does not control and does not eliminate those who generate such challenges that are beyond logic. This social network causes so many problems and lets people who have nothing in their heads express themselves.
I think the school is also to blame. Children are not to blame.

I find that the main fault lies with the social network that does not control and does not eliminate those who generate such challenges that are beyond logic.

As far as I know, steps have bees taken to avoid such tragic events to happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath. There's always someone who comes up with a new idea to circumvent rules and regulations.

Children are not to blame.

No, but they are the victims unfortunately and this is getting worse day by day.

Apart from the harmfulness among children and teenagers, there is something else extremely dangerous: the transformation of internet marketing into political marketing, with the possibility that I don't know what influencer with millions of followers could enter parliament or become president of the country.

I want to thank you for the even greater support you are giving me now. I really appreciate it.

My main takeaway from this is that it mainly just becomes harder and harder to be a parent as there are just so many more impulses and dangers to protect your kids against in this current age.

Nice Read!

It's so sad that some persons allow media to shape their thinking.
The young ones are just so worried about the likes and the comments, they just want to go viral hence they engage in such challenges.
Kids this days lack concentration because of this gadgets, I wish there are restrictions for kids some certain age not to use phones.
Maybe we should start teaching our kids not to get pressure into doing things just to feel among and they shouldn't be so interested about the likes on social media.
My heart goes out to the parents that lost their kids.😔😔
