I'll start by saying that fortunately, since I was born, I've lived in a nation where there is democracy, and where there is also freedom of expression. After this statement, I hope you understand my post today a little better.
When I got home, I switched on the television to watch the daily news. I know there are better media than television, but you can call me the old man from Restelo, but that's me. And I came across the news of President Trump declaring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to be a dictator and a comedian, who ended up dragging a nation into a war it couldn't win... (link)
And lo and behold, in my disbelief at what I had just heard, I found myself thinking about one of the most fundamental freedoms we have in modern, democratic societies: Freedom of expression. Of course, President Trump forgets that in Russia it's not possible for a simple old lady to contest the invasion of a neighbouring country, because she risks going to prison... and if she's more serious, or even a repeat offender, she ends up having a tragic accident (like falling down the stairs, or off a balcony... or even feeling very ill, dying violently from a certain intoxication), just as Alexei Navalny did a year ago. Someone who was never afraid to stand up to the real dictator.
Now, a simple question arises, why is the President of the United States of America making this kind of violent and fallacious speech? Simply to please his Russian counterpart? The intention to go down in history seems to unite these two men, who see no limits to their words and actions.
Not long ago, in the Assembly of the Republic in my country, a deputy from an extreme right-wing party offended a colleague in the Chamber, who is blind, by calling her a freak. At what point can our freedom affect others around us? Is our freedom always safeguarded, even if in order to exercise it we are trampling on the freedoms of those targeted?
How are we changing the world we knew until yesterday? Are we on the verge of a New World Order? It seems that Europe is going to have to change its strategy, and go from believing in a partner and ally that until now had been somewhat reliable, to a superpower that doesn't see the means to reduce supposed operating costs, but doesn't see that it will have a huge consequence on its own prosperity.
One thing I learnt early on in World History is that when a state doesn't develop and distribute its wealth by acquiring goods, services or even employing migrants, it ends up stagnating. In a few months' time, will we have a Ukrainian nation forced to accept conditions that neither it nor its European partners ever accepted? Is its fate in the hands of two leaders who only want to satisfy their lust for domination and the subjugation of their opponents?
What if Europe and Ukraine's other allies can't hold back the Russian impetus? Personally, I don't think that should be the outcome of this long-running aggression, which has claimed so many lives on both sides of the border. If that happens, it's one step closer to the Russian leader taking over another nation that he happens to think has important natural resources, playing up the narrative that he's protecting the people from a dictator...
How long should we tolerate this kind of discourse? We shouldn't silence them, but simply present facts that demonstrate their falsehood, in order to demystify them. If we force them to keep quiet, they end up gaining strength behind the scenes, launching narratives about being suppressed and censored by society.
Let them speak. The truth will come out, like oil in water.

Começo por dizer, que felizmente, desde que nasci que vivi numa nação onde existe democracia, e onde existe também a liberdade de expressão. Após esta declaração, espero que compreendam um pouco melhor a minha publicação de hoje.
Chegado a casa, liguei a televisão para ver as notícias diárias. Eu sei que existem melhores meios de comunicação que a televisão, mas podem chamar-me velho do Restelo, mas eu sou assim. E deparei-me com a notícia do Presidente Trump ter declarado que o Presidente Ucraniano, Volodymyr Zelenskyy de ser um ditador e um comediante, que acabou por arrastar uma nação para uma guerra que não poderia ganhar... E eis, que na minha incredibilidade, acerca do que eu tinha acabado de ouvir, dei comigo a pensar numa das mais fundamentais liberdades que temos nas sociedades modernas e democráticas: A liberdade de expressão. Claro que, o Presidente Trump esquece-se que na Russia não é possível a uma simples velhinha contestar a invasão do país vizinho, pois arrisca-se a ir para a prisão... e caso seja mais grave, ou mesmo reincidente, acaba por acontecer um trágico acidente (como cair das escadas, ou de uma varanda... ou mesmo sentir-se muito mal, morrendo de forma violenta, vítima de uma certa intoxicação), tal como aconteceu há um ano ao Alexei Navalny. Alguém que nunca teve receio de enfrentar o verdadeiro ditador.
Agora, uma simples questão se me coloca, porque estará o Presidente dos Estados Unidos da América a fazer este tipo de discurso violento e falacioso? Para simplesmente agradar ao seu homólogo Russo? A intenção de ficar na História parece unir estes dois homens, que não vêm os limites às suas palavras e actos.
Há bem pouco tempo, na Assembleia da República do meu país, um deputado de um partido de extrema direita ofendeu um colega de Hemiciclo, que é invisual, ao chama-la de anormal. Em que ponto a nossa liberdade pode atingir os outros em nosso redor? Está a nossa liberdade sempre salvaguardada, mesmo que para a exercermos, estejamos a pisar as liberdades dos visados?
Como estamos a mudar o mundo que até ontem conhecíamos? Estaremos à beira de uma Nova Ordem Mundial? Parece que a Europa vai ter que mudar a sua estratégia, e deixar de acreditar num parceiro e aliado que até agora tinha sido algo fiável, para uma super-potência que não vê os meios de reduzir supostos custos de operação, mas sem ver que irá ter uma enorme consequência na sua própria prosperidade.
Uma coisa cedo eu aprendi em História Mundial, quando um Estado não desenvolve e não distribui a sua riqueza, adquirindo bens, serviços ou mesmo empregando migrantes, acaba por estagnar. Será que daqui a poucos meses, teremos uma nação Ucraniana obrigada a aceitar as condições que nem ela, nem seus parceiros Europeus alguma vez os aceitassem? Será que o seu destino está entregue nas mãos de dois dirigentes, que apenas querem saciar a sua ânsia de domínio e de subjugação dos seus opositores?
E se a Europa, e os demais aliados da Ucrânia não conseguirem segurar o impeto Russo? Eu, pessoalmente, não considero que esse deva ser o desfecho para esta agressão que há tanto tempo dura, e que tantas vidas ceifou e marcou dos dois lados da fronteira. Se tal acontecer, é um passo até que o líder Russo tome mais uma nação, que por acaso considere que tenha importantes recursos naturais, fazendo a narrativa de estar a proteger o povo de alguém ditador...
Até quando devemos tolerar este tipo de discurso? Devemos não os calar, mas simplesmente apresentar factos que demostrem a sua falsidade, de forma a os desmistificar. Se os obrigarmos a ficarem calados, acabam por conquistar força nos bastidores, lançando narrativas de estarem a ser suprimidos e censurados pela sociedade.
Deixemo-os falar. A verdade virá ao de cima, como o azeite na água.
