Canada is surrounded by the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans. Besides their natural beauty, ecological importance, and rich deposits of goodness, these oceans also have military significance. To help defends Canadian maritime sovereignty, King George V proclaimed the Royal Canadian Navy in 1911 (under the name Naval Service of Canada). Besides its peace-time duties, the navy has played important roles in World War 1 and World War 2. In honour of the men and women of that distinguished body, this monument stands in Victoria's harbourfront.
