Welcome to this blog and to this post dedicated to the animals that are exhibited at the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA), located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In my previous post, I told you about my experience visiting the museum: Visiting a Museum of Nature and Archeology in Tenerife🏛️🌿🏺. I took too many pictures on the day of my visit, so I decided to share several posts about it on my blog.

As a kid, I loved watching Animal Planet shows and documentaries, and I used to learn the names of new species. This is a museum that your inner science kid would love to visit. I don't know if these animals are very realistic representations or are stuffed bodies, maybe some of them are, but the truth is that they are very realistic. In this museum, we can find animals of all kinds, reptiles, birds, insects, mammals, fish, and even a dinosaur skull (well, not really a dinosaur).

The birds are really very realistic. I was able to see some representations of birds such as the eagle, the hummingbird, and a local species, which I have already named several times in my blog, which is the Writhing Curlew. These species live here on the island and I once had the opportunity to see with my own eyes. The mammals on display were less realistic or seemed less true to life, but I guess they are a little harder to achieve. The squirrels look a little different from the real thing, in my opinion. What do you think?

If the birds were very well elaborated in this museum, the lizards even more so. Here on the island lizards are very common in the wild. I have been in natural areas where wild lizards approach you for food as if they were birds in a square, they are not so afraid of humans. Hopefully, they were all small in size, and I never came across a giant lizard-like the one in the museum. I don't know if it's my idea or if in Venezuela the lizards have brighter and more vivid colors, while here they are usually dark.

I don't think I had ever taken pictures of butterflies before in my life, let alone so many. In one section of the museum there was an entire room dedicated to insects, but in it was a shelf with over 20 drawers full of different species of butterflies and other insects such as moths and cockroaches. Each new drawer displayed even more colorful and bizarre butterflies. If you go into one of these museums I recommend making sure you have enough memory in your cell phone to take pictures, if you like to do so.

My favorite part was the fish and other fossils, both in rocks and living fossils. The Coelacanth is one of those animals that according to science should belong to ancient times but somehow did not become extinct. It is the fish in the photograph below, you may notice that it has additional fins that common fish do not usually possess, and a slightly different appearance than most fish. Another important fossil is the skull of a Pterosaur. It should be noted that this is not a dinosaur, but a flying reptile, which lived alongside the dinosaurs.

It may not look like it, but this turtle in the photo was really big. Perhaps it is a replica of the largest turtle in the world today. I know that much larger turtle species existed in the past and became extinct. Below, one of the most realistic mammal replicas I have seen in the museum is that of a species of marmot or rodent. Then, the mammal section was also very interesting.

One of the largest replicas in the museum is that of a very large manta ray, followed by a pair of dolphins of different types. I didn't know or perhaps didn't remember that there were also dolphins with orca-like colors. There was a tuna, or rather something similar to a swordfish. An animal very similar to a spider but in the sea was also exhibited in the museum, I suspect that maybe it was a spider crab, the same ones that appear in the famous program of dangerous fishing in Alaska. I must also say that the representations of the houses of some fishes were a little bizarre. Finally, I say goodbye with two photographs of fossils, one of a lizard and the other perhaps of another lizard or amphibian. I believe this same image appears in a dinosaur book I had as a child.

Incredible displays! I haven't seen such well-preserved and curated animals in a museum.

I really like this one:

That was a very big fish. I am glad you liked it.

Best regards!
