Video Wednesday: apocalyptic swarm of locusts in Mexico

in #hive-1277883 years ago

Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!

I cannot believe it´s has been a month again since my last contribution to this series (that I actually planned to be a weekly series). Sorry about that. Today, however, I am coming with something really cool. Or maybe creepy. Some 3 years ago, on the very first day of the year 2019 ( if I remember correctly) I happened to witness one of the most fascinating but also frightening natural phenomena in my life.

Back then, we were living in a little coastal village called Telchac Puerto in rural Yucatan, Mexico. We were enjoying yet another beautiful sunny day in the tropical paradise when all of sudden, the entire sky got covered with what must have been millions or maybe even billions of locusts.

Close up shot of one of them. This one was already dead.

The swarm was so huge and powerful that all green plants, leaves of palms and other trees around our house were gone literally within minutes. After getting over the awe, I made myself to capture this video.

I know it doesn´t look that intense in the footage but it was impossible to do justice to the scale and intensity of this experience with my old phone. Later on, after talking to the locals, we found out that the locust swarms infest the area in certain, usually regular intervals of several years and that the swarm that we just got to see was one of the largest in many years. Definitely one of the most impressive demonstrations of power of nature I have seen so far.

Thanks for your attention and I will see you in the next episode of my Video Wednesday series :)

Last year our country also had a huge swarm of locusts and beard huge loss.

I am sorry to hear this. What country are you talking about?

Pakistan

@tipu curate

Wow this is surprising and the first I would here such happen

Right. You don´t have this kind of phenomenon in Nigeria?

I know it doesn´t look that intense in the footage

Are you kidding? I would've freaked out. Now I'd like to see someone wield one of those electric rackets zaaaaap zaaaaaap it would be intense.

Hahaha that would be a lot of zaaaap zaaaaap :D But seriously, you couldn´t even be outside, they would crash into you, get tangled in your hair etc. We all had to run for cover when it started...

Jde z toho strach.

Tap to help.

They are millions! Aren't those the ones that some people also eat back in Mexico?

I know some insects are eaten in Mexico indeed but not sure if this particular species too. That would be a lot food for everyone :D

Hahaha really, a banquet!

I have been hearing about locust attacks in the last few years which have caused a lot of damage to agricultural land. Of course not seen directly.

It was the first time to see their destructive power for me too. Incredible. Poor farmers.

Thanks, really appreciate your support!

Is it grashoppers swarm? You should set a reminder for Wednesday videos mate :)

I think they were locusts, not sure about the difference between locusts and grasshoppers actually :) Well, it´s not that I would forget about the series, it´s more about having too many other things to post about :D

You seem to have abundance to post :)

Yeah, cannot complaint about lack of inspiration :)

Owooo... when it becomes this plenty, then it's really so creepy. This is bad for the farmers.

Yeah, this would probably be a bit too much fasinating insects even for your husband :D

Hahahaahhaha... Probably yes, he just never experienced that... I had, when I was still a kid. I remember that soldiers were sent to our village to help us hunting in the rice fields :-D. But roasted insects taste good, it's high protein delicacy LOL.

Yeah, I know. I keep hearing and reading that insect might be the main source of food for humans in future...

Awesome post

Thanks.

They will destroy the crops to a great extent, and true, it is an indication of some bad times. In my country, it happened in the northern part and it was so devastating that, people joined together and played arranged and played loud music for several days to prevent them coming, spending lakhs of rupees in that. Some even used fire. There is a word for this as well, its just not coming on top of my head.

I can imagine. The scale of the destruction was absolutely mindblowing. The farmers must have lost everything. How is the loud music trick? Does it work? Never heard of it...

It does work for sure. They took those loud DJ music and played it constantly.

Wow, that´s cool :) Maybe the locusts are just fans of some other type of music :D Thanks for the links.
