Hello everyone, I’m so excited to show you our new work added to the beach collection; The Glory dress. As a huge fan of going to the beach, you mostly see me at the beach in jeans. And you know what that means. It’s very hard for me to play with the water like I want to. It’s either I roll my jeans up or just stand far from the waves to avoid getting soaked.
The past few weeks, I wanted something different and after going through my closet, I didn’t get what I wanted. So I decided to create it as part of my beach collection and name it the Glory dress because @glorydee really helped me understand the basics of sewing this dress. I went to Pinterest looking for inspiration but I didn’t get what I wanted to I ended up creating it myself. Also as part of my plans, I wanted to learn how to sew gathers.
Since I didn’t receive any serious sewing education, I make it a point to learn a new thing from any sewing project and this was to learn how to gather. I used my mom’s leftover fabric and got a yard of linen, elastic band and zig zag tape. I used about 2 days to finish this dress because at some point, it got dirty and I had to wash and continue later.
I started by cutting the upper part.To make things easier for me, I used an old halter top as reference and cut all around it. I then cut a long rectangle for the lower part. I attached the linen to both the upper and lower parts.
I moved to the bottom part which was a little stressful. I began by making really tight stitches and then I got to find out that I needed loose stitches to gather the fabric so I did just that. But in the end that stitch got torn so I had to make two stitches and then use both of them to gather the fabric.
I moved on to attaching the two parts together. It was very fun for me to do this actually. I carefully attached them and the destroyed the gathers at the back of the dress.
I then fixed the elastic band and secured it with tight stitches.
I moved on to the two lace holes which would hold the back strap. I realized I had to unpick two places at the upper part to attach the straps so I did that. I then cut sone of the fabric to sew the strap for the back.
I then folded the edge of the dress and stitched it to prevent it from fraying. The last thing I did was to add the zig zag strap. After wearing it, the bust part was too loose so I sewed darts at those parts to fix the problem. And I was done.

To be very honest, I didn’t think sewing gathers was going to be this simple because of the stories I’ve heard. I’m glad I didn’t stress so much over this. I’m happy to have been able to bring what I envisioned into reality. I must say I’m proud of myself. Thank you for your time.
