Today, I made something that really made me emotional. My mom has had this cloth of my grandma for so many years. Even way before I was born. According to my mom, that was my Grandmother’s favourite cloth so she’s been keeping it for more than 40 years.
Unfortunately for me, my Grandma died when my mom was a teenager so I never had the opportunity to meet her. However, she left a hair scarf for me before she died. Sometimes I wonder how she knew my mom would have me in the first place for her to have given her that scarf.
The surprising part is now I am a big fan of hair scarfs. I could wear scarfs the whole year. So few days ago, my mom said she wanted to discard the cloth because it looked too old and some parts even looked faded. Knowing very well that was my granny’s favourite, I just didn’t allow it.
My mom was so curious to know what exactly I would make from this really old cloth. I actually pondered over it for days and then remembered that Granny already left me a hair scarf so why don’t I make another one. Just like that, I got my inspiration.
It’s took me about 8 hours to make this. I started at night, paused and finished the next day: today.
The materials I used:
• 1.60mm crochet hook
• Leftover yarn
• A pair of scissors
• The cloth
Procedure
The whole point of this project was to add crochet edging to the fabric and make it more presentable.
I began by cutting a triangle out of the cloth just how I would want the hair scarf.
I then went ahead to make the edging which was pretty simple. I made the edging with single crochet and picots. I made single crochet and then a picot, all through till the very end.
I made a picot by chaining 4 and the slip stitching in the first chain.
It was really difficult creating holes to insert the crochet but I did that with the hook whiles I crocheted at the edges.
I wanted to add tassels so I wrapped crochet around four of my fingers and then I took it off. I cut the crochet and then tied the upper part and the forming the tassel.
The result.
I’m never quiet when I’m crocheting but today, I was really quiet but also very excited that I still found a way to make something from something really old.
I wasn’t really sure if it was going to come out as I wanted but I was just hopeful that I would make granny proud at the end of the day. I felt really satisfied after I was done and to me I know wherever granny is, she’s happy. The most important thing is that I got to achieve my goal of not letting go of her favorite cloth.
Oh and my mom was also happy that at least, I gave the cloth a new purpose.Thank you for your time.
