“Sophie Scrap Cat” The Crushed Velvet Plush Feline Toy - Hand Stitched for my Daughter

in #hive-1279112 years ago

Hey @NeedleWorkMonday community!!

This is Danaidh B posting to you from Scotland!!

So a few years ago I undertook 6 months of Art Classes (once or twice a week) where I chose to start a sewing project recycled materials and all the leftover scrap materials in the art room I could find.

Every material I used was either never going to be used again, or binned and sent to landfill or something, so I had to do something with them.

I had a good thought about what I wanted to make, and what kind of materials I wanted to use: the colours, the feel and texture, the age, and thickness etc.. etc…

So after I finally decided on some fabrics that I liked, and what I wanted to make from them… I got started.

Now unfortunately I don’t have the drawing plans anymore and I don’t have any set up photos but I do have the finished piece here to show you :)

This is “Sophie Scrap Cat” she consists of ‘mustard crushed velvet’ scraps on her body and back, with a ‘tartan (plaid)’ stripe down her back, irregular buttons for eyes, a fuzzy felt tongue and lentil filled big paddy paws

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HER? :)

It took me 6 months to hand stitch this lovable plush toy for my middle child Julia, who really loves animals (cats at the time).

She sits on her ‘special cushion’ or ‘throne’ as I like to call it.

This cushion is also made from ‘mustard crushed velvet’ and many other recycled fabrics, materials, buttons, and gemstones from an old necklace by partner Georgia made me when we first met and fell in love then decided to have children (now 3! Aged 12, 8 and 10 months.

This also took me some time to create and finish, (about 2 months of weekly classes) this one with no planning or thought, just fired straight in without measuring anything 🤭

I actually wanted to make a ‘standard/normal cushion’, which turned into a ‘meditation cushion’, and now it’s “Sophie’s Special Throne”

My daughter Julia named her Sophie when I presented it to her. She loves it, although a couple of years ago she did pull her fuzzy felt tongue off and some of the lentils I used to stuff her big flappy paws had spilled out.

She always cheers me up when I see her.
She is in need of a little TLC and is strictly ornamental just now.

Some day soon I hope to patch her up

Just look at her face, doesn’t she make you smile? She is a little rough around the edges, but she would have never been created if I didn’t put so much effort into her from having never sewn anything in my life!! except from a few holes or badges on my clothes or something!!

Let me know what you think of my work. I am a complete novice at textiles and sewing but I do come from Dundee, in Scotland, which is famous for its Jute Mills and I know my Nana worked in one most of her life from a very young age! So Hopefully the crafty hand work runs in the family. :)

Thank you for viewing my post.
If you would like to know anything more about “Sophie Scrap Cat” ?? Please let me know and ask away!

Many thanks,
Danaidh B

You have a great way of recycling those materials that were meant to landfill. And I have high respect for anyone that is into recycling. Good job @danaidhbee and thank you for sharing your project. God bless you and your Julia. 🥰

Thank you very much :) 🙏 I love recycling and also admire anyone who is into recycling, nothing goes in the bin here if it hasn’t passed my judgement haha 😂
We drove past a landfill sight today and the methane smell was insane! Awful! I educated the kids on them and to recycle at all costs!

Thank you for viewing my post @jonalyn2020
Have a lovely day

That's a noble act. Educating the kids would help decrease our waste disposal. If only people around the world would consider recycling first before buying new things. It would lessen the garbage to be thrown on the landfill.

I also like recycling and was thinking how to save some things here that would be useful. Have a good day also to you @danaidhbee 🥰

I am constantly trying to do my not for the future but sometimes it seems it’s in one ear and out the other, one day they will pick it up I’m sure :) and be even better than I could ever become!

Well done, keep up the hard work and dedication.
Thank you 🙏

True, since they're still kids. But as long as we adults keep on showing them, they'll appreciate it in the future and be able to do recycle on their own way.

Yeah for sure, they will always resist our teachings but I think that's them actually absorbing it and questioning it to see if its really true or not.. haha clever kids ;)

Yeah, they're clever enough and wise to remember everything they saw what we're doing. So best teaching is to show them constantly. Cheers to more recycling my new friend. 😊

It’s hard work when we have 3 of em all different ages 😂 constantly being challenged!

All the best!!
Speak soon :)

Excellent! It's good that you were able to recover those pieces to make a beautiful stuffed animal. Sometimes giving second chances to scraps gives us great projects like these. The cushion also looks very cute. Congratulations! ❤️

Thank you :) yeah I could t see then go, some of the fabrics were older than me and had been lying there for decades, she is 100% individual and unique.

Haha thanks :) it is really soft and plush too

Ciao @danaidhbee, from a fellow Scot, in Italy... I adore your cat!! I love how you pieced it together and used scrap materials - the final character is just brilliant. And the cushion is fabulous too! Really nice work - it inspires me a lot in making spontaneous creatures from fabric and threads.... Blessings!

Hello!! Fellow Scots Lass! How you doin’? ;) thanks for viewing my post about Sophie, and I’m glad you like her. She is very special to my daughter and understands she is strictly ornamental just now.

Go for it!!! It’s so much fun, Doesn’t matter if they’re all funny looking and scruffy, they have character and have been given life! :)

Let’s see it

I'm good, cheers @danaidhbee ! Yey: I made a doll last year, which was a really interesting process! Did you ever see a book called Dirty Bow Wow And Other Love Stories ? Sophie should be in there!

Looking forward to seeing what else you're sewing! Much love 😍

Aw cool, yeah it’s hard, I tried to look at plans and try it out but ended up ditching it and just freestyled it haha.
No? I’ve not heard of it, I’m more of a bookwriter kinda person than a bookworm, I’ll have a look though :) thanks!

Not sewn in a while actually, this is one of very few pieces unfortunately. I should maybe do more? 🤭
