The Long and Short of It

The Long Skirt
When I was a schoolgirl, prairie dresses were in style. The most coveted of those dresses were the Jessica McClintock Gunne Sax dresses. Fortunately for a girl of limited means, Simplicity published patterns for some of her designs--patterns I still cherish:

I had to alter the pattern for my now much larger waist, but that was easily done. Now to reveal the finished skirt:

The main fabric is a cotton flannel, so it is as comfy as an old work shirt. The wide band is a remnant of stretch velvet I had on hand (washable, to be compatible with the flannel.) I finished the wide ruffle with a hem of wide grosgrain tuxedo ribbon and the bottom ruffle with rick rack trim.

Coming Soon: The Short Skirt
When I saw a unique skirt on Etsy with 3 tiers of pleats, I bought the pattern. My youngest daughter loved it and went fabric shopping. Don't you love this animal print?

It took me a bit of time pinning the pleats and pressing them, but the pieces are ready to assemble now. I hope you look forward to seeing the finished skirt almost as much as my daughter does!

Love this animal print fabric!😍

I like the print of the fabric, it looks great.
Cheers!

I love the design of the animal print fabric, I can't wait to see the end of it.

Cute skirts! I loved the prairie shirt and skirt look growing up. I never had any....but now where something similar these days. :-)

Both skirts look beautiful - those short tiered skirts can look fabulous with the right drape: so fluid. But I love the prairie skirt! So practical, in lots of ways, for keeping warm. I love the finishes from things you had "on hand" 😍

I actually did not have quite enough rick rack to go around that huge bottom ruffle hem--I had to go to the store for one more package! I was luck they hat the right size in black, or my skirt would remain unfinished.

Wow nice idea thanks for sharing @fiberfrau

I look forward to seeing the finished work. I especially love the skirt with the animal prints.

Wow! Wow! that's what I said when I saw the pictures of your long skirt. this is gorgeous!!!!

Thank you!

Oh my.
I love the Scottish material specially. Have never purchased or used a fabric like that although I bought a skimpy skirt of such materials and often wear it around the house.

A three tier skirt has been on my mind for long too but it consumes alot of fabrics and I was waiting for the right time to buy enough of it.
The fabric print is beautiful too.
