Hi fellow needleworkers! It's been a while since I last posted but I hope y’all are staying creative as always.
Earlier this month, I went to the market to get fabrics for some of my clients and I came across a beautiful fabric which I bought for my mum on impulse. The funny aspect was that she followed me to the market and she even helped me pick the fabric fully unaware that I was getting it for her.
My mum does have a petite and graceful figure and she loves outfits that add a bit of volume to her look. I knew Bubu would be perfect on her. It is free comfortable and versatile enough to be worn to events or even church Sunday service.
This is the fabric I got for her and I'm so happy with the colour and pattern, it's just stunning.
Some People would call this type of fabric “brocade” but I think it is more of a “damask” fabric. This fabric has a beautiful design and was pretty affordable. It cost about $3 per yard and I got 2 yards due to the style of dress I wanted to make for her. I also got 1 yard of a matching plain fabric which cost less than $2 per yard. The total money spent on fabric was approximately $8 in total.
So I decided to make a Bubu, with a kimono neckline and inner belt to create a nice silhouette around the waist
regrets:
- Bubu usually takes a lot of fabrics to make and I should have bought more fabrics.
- I am not so in love with the quality of the damask fabric but at least it looks great and I'm happy.
The making process:
Unfortunately, I didn’t snap my steps because I was so busy and I had deadlines to meet. So I will just give a brief description of how I made the dress.
This dress is quite straightforward to make. I use 2yards of damask fabric and 1yard of matching plain fabric and thread.
Firstly, I fold the fabric into two and cut out the back pattern
Then the front. The neckline is a kimono neckline, so I reduced 1.5 inches from the front because of the 2 inches kimono band.
I sewed the front and back pieces together and hemmed the sleeves and the bottom
I added a little design to the neckline with buttons and this is the final look. My mum was so surprised and happy with the dress, though she complained it was too big but I told her it was good for her.
But who would have guessed this was an $8 dress? Normally I would sell at $15-$16. Would you pay more or less for this dress? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section.
