A selection of the yarns I am adding to my collection this year for the Travelling Books project.

Finish It February - What is it?

I came across this idea last year and tried it then for the first time. Essentially, you pull all your unfinished objects from wherever they have been hiding and sort through them. Each object is sorted into one of three piles:

  • Yay Pile - you like it, you want to finish it and you'll like the item when it's finished.
  • Nay Pile - you don't like it, you don't want to finish it or you've grown out of it.
  • Pile of Ambiguities - you have no idea what you want to do about these objects.

The Pile of Ambiguities is a great idea - you simply pack these away and review again in 2024.

For the Nays, decide whether you want to re-cycle the yarn in your stash. If yes, remove needles and any markers and add to your stash (you don't need to frog at this stage), If no, pack ready to donate. This could be by putting the unfinished object plus the yarn and pattern to complete it and giving away; or by donating the yarn to textile reclamation.

For the Yays, sort into two piles: objects you'd like to finish in February; objects for later, either that you can knit through the year, or that you'll re-visit in February 2024 and plan for that year.

You can read about this process in more detail in this post from last year.

Review of 2022 - How did I do?

It was an interesting experience and didn't go as I expected. I discovered that I wasn't really that bothered about some of the items when it came down to doing something about them:

  • Finished - 3 objects - I donated one and one didn't fit and moved to the Pile of Ambiguities.
  • Donated - 7 objects - mostly to charity, but some to textile reclamation.
  • Did nothing - 3 objects - I didn't care enough to spend my time that way.
  • Moved to Pile of Ambiguities - 5 objects - again, I wasn't sure I cared enough to do these.
  • Finished later in the year - 6 pairs of socks.

You can see the full inventory at the bottom of the post (some objects are counted twice as they fall into more than one category).

The most interesting results were the number of things I decided to donate, either because I didn't care, or I had already decided I didn't want them or because, even though I had finished them, I had grown out of the object. It was a really useful exercise for helping me to focus on what I do and don't want to do. It was very liberating to decide how I want to spend my time and removing objects that were no longer of interest to me.

At some stage, I also sorted my yarn stash and organised better storage for them. I can't remember when I did that, exactly, but I wanted yarn where I could easily see it, instead of hidden away all over the house. I know I started by buying five nine-litre stacking boxes (roughly, holds enough yarn for a garment - a jumper or cardigan), and then having to make two more trips to buy more boxes!

Preparing for Finish It February 2023

F6D8E686-DC5F-46F8-A5CA-1B46A314B9AD.jpeg

My newly sorted yarn stash, labelled, and separated into garment vs accessory quantities.

I started by pulling everything together, emptying various project bags and sorting through the stacking yarn storage boxes. I made decisions as I went along about which items I wanted to include in this year's Finish It February and which I wanted to put into the Pile of Ambiguities for review next year.

It was much easier this year: I've already removed many of the objects and yarns that don't serve me; the Travelling Books project is the driver for the next two years, together with developing creative practice (I wrote about creative practice in this post and the second half of this post).

I'm in the second month of the Travelling Books project, so I'm starting to get an idea about how I work and what I need for the project: the types of materials, storage, yarns and organisation. I have a stash of patterns and pattern books, and I've been buying reference books for knitting. I have some design and craft materials and some new sketchbooks for collecting and trying out ideas.

I sorted all the yarns in my stash, so that I knew what I had. These are mainly in garment quantities, in a limited colour range and often too thick for the small designs that will appear in the Travelling Books. I've stored them by quantity, then by fibre (wool, cotton, linen, silk, alpaca) and weight (4-ply, double knitting, aran, chunky).

Then I put together the preparation tasks for the Travelling Books project. Over the past three months I've been able to start a collection of yarns in different colours, weights and fibre, buying all of them at discounts, as they became available. I had another discount to spend by last weekend and found I couldn't remember what I already had and where there were gaps.

I spent last Sunday cataloguing all the yarns in a spreadsheet and then starting to fill some of the gaps. Three lots arrived this week, one of them in a huge pink sack like gifts from Santa. It's been very exciting opening them, but I know they need some organising. Some come as skeins, so they need winding into balls before they can be used.

I ended up with the following priorities for Finish It February:

1. Yays Finish It February - Priorities

Yay!ItemWhat needs doing?How long?
1Drawing and design materialsorganising and storage3-4 hours

5Bucket List ChallengeLearn Procreate (deadline 27 March 2023)5 days

2. Yay! Bucket List Challenge

The Needlework Monday Community has set a challenge for the first three months of 2023: complete something from your needlework bucket list.

We are giving you 3 months to mark at least one thing off your 🄽🄴🄴🄳🄻🄴🅆🄾🅁🄺 🄱🅄🄲🄺🄴🅃 🄻🄸🅂🅃!!

Whether it’s completing a project, learning a new needlework skill/technique, purchasing those must have supplies for your next venture, visiting a fiber arts fair, festival or museum, creating your own pattern for the first time etc etc, we want to challenge you to it!

Remember, we do accept any form of fiber arts that deal with knotting, braiding, felting, lacing or any form of manipulation of fabrics and yarns. If any of these are on your list of things to accomplish you can include those in this challenge as well.

The aim is to at least reach one goal but we want to motivate you to do as many as you can within a three month timeframe.

I've always been frustrated that I don't know how to use Canva and now, after participating in several design workshops, I want to be to produce storyboards and mood boards for design ideas. So, in addition to practically organising my work space and materials, I've included starting to learn ProCreate as one of my Finish It February priorities.

3. Yays - Projects for Later

I like to have some knitting on the go for relaxing. I've selected the following projects, most of which are at least half done and some of them nearly finished for leisure knitting. Mainly, they don't require very much concentration and some of them are small enough for travelling. I've set each one up in its own project bag, so they are ready to go whenever I want to do them.

Projects for later - from top left: cocktail socks, yellow and blue fashion socks, self patterning winter socks (knitted double); Mr P's cashmere scarf; samples for the sketchbooks. From bottom left - lace "perfect cardigan pattern"; Noro top-down raglan cropped cardigan and cropped moss stitch jacket - scroll down to get to the cardigan.

4. Pile of Ambiguities 2023

The remaining unfinished (or in one case, finished) objects. I'm not making a decision about these, or I've made a decision and I'm not going to do anything about it this year. No Nays for this year, I've eliminated them all already.

Conclusion

In total, nine items (from 21 in total) were brought forward from 2021, seven in the Pile of Ambiguities and two in the knitting projects for later this year. Four pairs of socks, a scarf and a cardigan were added during 2022 - twelve in total. Five new tasks were added for 2023.

For unfinished objects, I've come down from 21 items in February 2022, to 12 in February 2023. I loved it when I found out that you could have more than one object in progress at the same time. I remember a woman at a knitting group telling me that she had, "a project for every degree of tiredness", which makes sense.

I like to have plain knitting things that I can pick up and put down, and take with me when travelling - socks and scarves. Sometimes, an object has a tricky bit to negotiate, maybe turning the heel, or picking up the gusset, which needs a bit more attention. So you need something else that has just eighty plain rows to do and requires no thinking at all that you put in your tote bag for travelling.

Longer term, I do want to create more garments, but maybe smaller ones - hats and gloves and mittens and socks and scarves. For me, and for gifts. Perfect little things that can't be found in the shops, that fit exactly with an outfit, or are the perfect present for a friend or family member. Tiny objects where I can try out patterns and textures and echniques.

For the next two years, I'm thinking more about the Travelling Books, creating small pieces of work that reflect or convey an idea or a mood, ideally, that speak to people and elicit a response. The response might not always be, "that's lovely", it might be "I don't like that".

We'll see.

Thats the most organized knitting I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot - my mum used to knit constantly) - nice work, and I like the idea behind Finish it February, thats pretty smart !

@shanibeer! You Are Alive so I just staked 0.1 $ALIVE to your account on behalf of @hoosie. (8/10)

The tip has been paid for by the We Are Alive Tribe through the earnings on @alive.chat, feel free to swing by our daily chat any time you want.

Yes, I like Finish It February - you don't have to worry the rest of the year because you know you'll catch up with everything in February 😍 It gives a sense of achievement, just in itself, everything's nice and tidy and you've made a decision about everything, even if the decision is not to make a decision 😂

What did your mum like to knit?

Lol - 'you don't have to worry the rest of the year' - that's great !

My mum used to knit all kinds. I can remember a lot of jumpers and cardigans. She also did a lot of crochet. She would crochet these colourful squares about 10cm across, all in different colours, never the same, and then join them together to form large blankets, that looked really pretty. She also made really nice smaller ones for prams. And I can also remember her doing embroidery. I have 4 brothers, and she embroidered each of us a table cloth and napkins, as part of our wedding gifts - something unique for us to have from her. And she did it all the time - she really loved it. I have found memories of it. And there was balls of wool everywhere. If you opened a cupboard or a drawer, there was always likely to be wool in there !

I like the annual sorting out 😍 It feels like such an achievement 😂 It was much quicker this year. Although some things had got distributed through the house, most things were close together.

If you opened a cupboard or a drawer, there was always likely to be wool in there

Respect! 😍

I got overwhelmed with wool everywhere, and I could never find the particular wool I was looking for, or only after I had turned out multiple drawers and cupboards and pulled out everything from under the bed. By that time, I would have lost the will and went and had a cup of tea!

The embroidered table linen sounds wonderful, all made with love. That's truly beautiful. Wonderful things to have and treasure.

And then look what I found !

Aw, look at that, so lovely! They're a big thing now, making these sorts of blankets. Famous designers hold knit-a-longs or crochet-a-longs and thousands of people around the world take part. They're wonderful heirlooms and a great thing to pass on.

Thank you for sharing 😍

You are so organized, @shanibeer! I respect you. At my place, all the yarns are in one box .......... My daughters pulls tails from yarn balls ....... I want to organize my materials one day like you.

I want to have a group like yours. The traveling book project is wonderful. I look forward to reading how the project goes.

Tails are begging to be pulled 😍

It has taken me a long time to organise things (and still some jobs to do this year) but gradually I am getting there.

I'm researching the Swinging Sixties for the next project. I went to look at Pinterest. It's a bit overwhelming!

0D4208B9-F5EA-4FF9-A349-55EBBF8EA57E.png

The three categories approach seems like a decent idea to expand to other areas of life as well.

That's true 😂

Hope everything is going well with you. I'm more than usually busy with things off-chain, but look forward to catching up with your adventures 🙂

Wow!!!!! you did a great job, dear! I am very impressed!!!! this is a great idea for my mountain of sewing projects. It's only growing and I'm scared to approach it. 🙈 I will definitely use your experience 😀

😍

Gosh, I can never be this organized in my life, I will run crazy trying to sort out things 😃...

Looking at how you have sorted all this out and made a perfect arrangements makes me envy you.
This relieved emotional stress on what to do first and give a very good total value of your time.

I like the fact that you are now resolved to make smaller yet unique items, am quite sure you would have admirers when you start using them.
God bless your kind heart for donating to charity those items you no longer use, they are helpful somewhere else yet not everyone will be willing to give out things as such.
I have friends who prefer to burn her clothes other than have another human from a low class wear any of her outfits.

I wish you speed and luck with all the outfits.

You're so right about relieving emotional stress 😍
Everything is ordered so I don't have to think about it any more (until next February anyway 😁). I can just enjoy making.
Some people are strange, aren't they? They don't want or need something, but no one else can it either 🤷‍♀.
I hope you are okay and everything is going your way. Take care of yourself 🤗.

Everything is fine here and am okay too.
Thanks alot.

I don't knit or crochet like I used to, I'm more into sewing, but I can see where this could be used for sewing as well.
The funny thing is that I have a new sewing machine that I just took out of the box. I've had this machine for 2 years now & haven't sewed a single stitch. I left town shortly after I got it in 2021 and was gone for 7 months. However, even after my return I still haven't done anything. About 3 months ago I took it out the box & set it up on an old desk that I planned for my sewing table thinking it might get me to do something. That didn't work either, I still haven't sewed a single stitch. I have about 5 or 6 storge bins with sewing & craft materials & just haven't found the time to do anything. Between spending lots of time on Hive & playing my games on my tablets, I just haven't taken the time out. But, I know it won't be this month but I will use your system for my sewing projects and also better organize my other craft project & maybe get rid of those things that I keep saying I'll get back to but never do.

Great organization you got there!

Hello @successchar 😍

You're right, it can be used for sewing, too - or any kind of making activity. I love the thought of your storage bins full of materials! I liked getting rid of some of the things I wasn't interested in any more, it felt like getting unclogged.

I bought a new sewing machine a couple of years ago, to replace the one I'd bought as a young woman and had for forty years! I haven't used it much, either, I'm more into knitting now. Dressmaking was important when I was younger and didn't have much money, I would make everything.

Let me know when you try it!

😯Woah, this is a lot of organising! I give it to you @shanibeer for a work well done. Well, about Procreate, I see designs and drawings on YouTube that make me want to try it out so badly, but since I don’t have an iPad, I’ve been thinking of getting the Procreate Pocket for phone. You should definitely take up learning it. I’ll be waiting to hear about your progress!

Thank you 😍 I think it took longer to write the post than to do the organising 😂. I had already done so much preparation last year that it was easy to do this year. It's lovely having everything organised. Last night I wanted something calming to do while I watched a film: I went down my list, picked some hanks to wind into balls and had a lovely relaxing time. 😊

I saw the phone version of Procreate - that's good idea!

Wow Shani! This is absolutely AMAZING! Any organizing I thought I’ve done is out the window now. 🤣😂

I love, love and love the way you sorted out your projects form the Yays to the Nays! Then how you listed out everything you’ve accomplished and where those projects ended up. It’s so smart to do that so you’ll always have a record to look back on and a to do list right there at your fingertips.

I love what that lady said about having a project for every degree of tiredness…I knew right off exactly what she meant and it’s brilliant.

I hope you enjoy learning the new program for our challenge and I look forward to seeing the designs you come up with. This post was so great to read and I’m sure everyone who reads it will be motivated.

Keep up the great work and thanks so much for joining the challenge and sharing these great ideas on organizing our messy workspaces ~ 🤩😘

Thank you @crosheille and lovely to see you 😍

I like a good tidy, and I'm so much happier with a system for sorting things out, rather than dragging stuff around with you for years. I've changed so much over the past couple of years, I think I set challenges last year (the yays!) which I had already grown out of, I just felt I should do something about them. Now I'm moving more into "what do I want to do?" I'm very lucky that I've reached a stage of life where I can do that. 😁

Well, I was motivated by the Needlework Monday community and the Bucket List Challenge, although I wasn't expecting my challenge to be what it turned out to be 😂. But that's the fun of it, isn't it?

I think you're a pretty good organiser, too 😘

I am so inspired by this and hope to one day reach this point in my life too where I have the time and motivation to actually plan things out.

Hahaha yes, that is truly the fun of it al!!

Thanks so much Shani, I appreciate that ~ ☺️🤗😘
