Comfort Knitting is MY Kind of Therapy

in #hive-1279113 years ago

Hello lovely makers and creators of Hive!! I just finished my leg warmers and will post them tomorrow but I just wanted to share what I love to work on between projects.

It's All About the Process

Is it just me or do you feel like something just isn't right when you don't have a project to work on? I always would bring some sort of portable knitting project when my kids were in school and I would attend their various concerts and events. There was always some sort of down time before the event started, so I would get out my knitting and work. Since I am also somewhat shy, my knitting gave me something to do. People ALWAYS comment on my knitting, asking questions which is nice.

I first made this blanket pattern as a commission for a dear friend. After I memorized the pattern I just didn't want to stop! It's VERY easy:

  • Row 1: K1, *yo, K3, [knit 2 tog] twice, K3, yo, K1. Repeat from * across.
  • Row 2: Purl
  • Row 3: Knit

Repeat Rows 1 - 3

I was given 3 colors, so I did a color blocking since I wasn't familiar with the pattern and wasn't sure about stripes. The wool is a lightly spun lopi yarn that is great for outer garments and is scratchy. I love it since I had worked with this type of yarn in the past when knitting socks.

Lopi spun yarn is from Icelandic sheep and is very lofty and super WARM! I am actually planning on knitting a vest from this lovely wool. I pretty much love the variety in the different breeds.

The photo below is just my daughter's blanket shawl I made her a year or so ago. I find it interesting that the pattern is a little lost in the wool. I was thinking of making another with that yarn, but may choose a different route. We shall see.

My current comfort knitting is just bits of yarn from various projects. The blanket is long enough now that it keeps my legs warm while I am knitting. :-)
I have old handspun mixed in with this project which makes it extra special.

I hope you are all having a lovely weekend. It's cold but sunny where I live.
God bless and be well!! I look forward to seeing and hearing about your creations.

I like to try this. but I am afraid that I won't be finishing it 🙊.

That's the beauty of making a blanket like this, I just grab it when I have a little extra time. :-)

Omg, I wouldn't finished ever. You are Amazing.

You are sweet. Thank you @afrikablr!

Beautiful thanks for sharing 🙏🏽

I always have a project with me as well - but mostly socks since they are so portable. a blanket requires a much larger bag :)
You used lopi for socks? How did that turn out?
I just made a pair of hiking socks out of 100% wool and they felted like crazy on a long hike... 😧

Hello @mariannewest! I haven't made socks from lopi yarn in decades. It actually was a very inexpensive yarn when I was first teaching myself to knit thus the reason why I bought it. I was always perplexed why the yarn broke so easily but that is because they put very little twist in the fiber. :-) I actually have some raw Icelandic wool that I will be souring this spring to then spin into (maybe) lopi yarn. I hear it is hard to spin.

I didn't hike in my socks but I remember them being very rough and itchy, which didn't really bother me. I was just happy to have made anything.

When looking at lopi yarn patterns, I never see any for socks so you may have discovered the reason why. :-) I have a lopi yarn vest that I want to make in the near future. Time flies so hopefully I can wear it a few times before summer is upon us!

It is a fascinating yarn and many knitters who like rustic wool really love it. I think it might be a bit warm for most days in Southern California. But I want to try it some day...

I love the blocks 😍. The structure is really interesting, too, the way the loops form and you're getting that 3D look - must be good for holding the heat, all those extra bubbles of air. I've heard a lot about Lopi but I haven't seen any yet, I'm looking forward to when we get a yarn fair and I can investigate.

It's a good idea to have a project for those in-between moments (at my first knitting group, one member told me she had "a knitting project for every degree of tiredness"). I like to set up something simple at home (the blanket would be ideal), and small things for travelling.

It's fabulous knitting in public, everyone talks to you. I think we have a national day of knitting in public here ... I've just checked, it's worldwide and it's 11 June this year.

Thank you @shanibeer! I had a young woman at a local restaurant thank me for knitting in public. She obviously knitted herself but I had never been thanked before. :-) I honestly either have a book or knitting with me if I am going somewhere and there is waiting involved. I just like to keep busy.
