Impromptu Needle Felted Gnome

Gnomes, Gnomes, Gnomes!

Hello makers and creators of Hive! I hope you are having a lovely weekend.

I have noticed in the last year or so that gnomes have really become very popular, especially in the quilting catalogs I receive. Because of this, I decided to make my own version of a gnome.

I have worked with children over the decades, and have lots of supplies available to work with which is fun. I didn’t have an example to work with and I am quite pleased with the results.

Needle felt entails a lot of poking of wool with a needle that has a barb or hook on the end. I usually listen to an audio book while I am working to make the task more enjoyable.

I had some primitive wool that had mottled colors that I needed to use. It didn’t look that inspiring after I ordered it on line, but it was perfect for this project. I like the fact that his face has different colors mixed in to give an almost realistic look to my gnome.

I am not sure when I will make more. Summer will be here sooner than I expect and life will become a whirl of inside and outside activity. I am just thankful for the winter months because I can settle down a little and create.

God bless and be well! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Good gnome, anyway i started to do needle felting but it really takes times.. it made me wondering, how many hours you spent to make this gnome?

Thank you @devyleona! I am not sure the amount of time total. I had a bunch of clean wool that wasn't good to spin with that I needle felted into base forms for little felted dolls and creatures. And yes, needle felting takes lots of time and focus, since the barbs hurt when you hit your fingers with them! I think I made this little guy in one evening but I had the interior form already made and the hat and feet were also pieces I had felted prior. It was more of an exploratory project using supplies that weren't so precious to me and they needed to be used.

The gnome turned out great! I still have to try needle felting. I am not sure that I have the patience for it :)

Thank you @mariannewest! If you stay with small creatures, it isn't too bad. I like to listen to an audio book whilst I needle felt. I like the preciseness of the activity. It reminds me of working with clay as a child. I loved to form creatures out of the clay. Sometimes I would just move the clay until something appeared that I would then make. I knew I wanted to make a gnome but didn't know exactly what he would look like until I started forming the shapes. It really is quite fun.

Had to check google for the meaning of Gnome, I Haven't seen one before not even a movie of one

Its good to bring me this knowledge and am happy to see the calm and cute oerson. I wished I can see how you made this.

Hello @monica-ene! I will try to make a video showing the needle felting techniques. It would be hard to teach just with photos alone.

And thank you for mentioning that you had never heard of gnomes. I will see what I can find about their history and put that in my next gnome post. God bless and be well.

Thanks dear, thanks for all your effort ❤
