My First Patchwork Skirt

in #hive-1279113 years ago

Good morning Hive makers and creators! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I am currently knitting away at my second leg warmer and will be able to show you the results soon.

I am also spending some time on my spinning wheel to make hopefully a three-ply yarn for socks. My goals these days are to finish projects and then spin for actual projects AND take notes so I can refer back and learn.

I like to make and create different things so I spend more time making and less time note taking. Maybe I would learn how to make less mistakes if I was more methodical in my learning. I suppose that is my ultimate goal. And isn’t the fun in the process of creating?

I always have a furry friend to help. Sometimes I am in this bedroom ironing for hours and I can look over to see a lovely kitty sleeping in the sun.

The biggest lesson I learned is that I need to learn how to use my serger sewing machine. It is quite intimidating and I just need to hunker down, spend some time with it, and learn.

The issue with using all the little squares is that the edges will fray over time. I am one of those people that when I make something I want it to last. Thus I hand finished all the edges myself after trying to zig zag stitch and it pulling too much on the fabric.

I think I will make a linen slip to go underneath with a bit of ruffle peaking out the bottom. We shall see.

Well, I need to go back to knitting. While it was warm yesterday, it will be feeling once again like winter in Kansas tonight and for the next week. God bless and be well!

Too cute!!! Hello @cuddlekitten!!

Wow!!! I'm just smitten!!!! I thought you were going to sew a blanket from pieces. but the skirt! This is amazing!!!! I really like your skirt and your patience! And I also really like your red fluffy cat! 😀👍

Thank you so much @tali72. It did take a long time to make but I am very happy with the results. Many more to come, I hope.

And yes, I love my furry companion.

It is a great job that you did, learning to use a machine can be intimidating but I encourage you to master it with patience.

Thank you!! And you are right, of course @youyowi! I just need to spend the time with my machine and figure it out. :-)

That's a beautiful skirt, it looks really swishy! A linen petticoat would be lovely, too 😍. I read somewhere that if you add a layer of paper when you are stitching, it helps to stop the fabric getting pulled. You tear the paper off afterwards.

Love the cat 🙂

Thank you @shanibeer! I think I just need to figure out my serger but thanks for the suggestion none-the-less.

Congratulations on finishing your first patchwork skirt! I love the fabric pieces and how all of the colors in the squares tie in together. My mother would love seeing this and I will be showing her. She’s been a seamstress most of her life and has done lots of quilt work. I think I will challenge her to make her very own skirt like this. Lovely finish!

Thanks for sharing ~

Thank you so much for the kind comments @crosheille! While it did take a long time to make, I am vary happy with my first attempt. I have a lot of patchwork ideas to create and I look forward to seeing what your mother creates as well. It’s so much fun to personalize my wardrobe with items I made myself.

You’re welcome :)

I’m looking forward to seeing your other ideas. It’s a really nice feeling when we’re able to wear the things we made with our own hands!

Agreed @crosheille! It makes me feel a little like a kid again....kinda shy but excited at the same time!

😆😄🤗

Nice mix of colors. I know cats are good company (except when they want to shred paper patterns!)

Thank you @fiberfrau! They DO love to shred paper, I found that out recently. Paper patterns is a big no-no though! :-)

Nice job weldon thanks for sharing @yoginiofoz

Wow, your skirt turned out great! I love the color combination. I'm a sucker for patchwork as well. I started (but haven't finished ...it's in the WIP pile, lol) a window curtain that way, and I have a shower curtain that is also patchwork. It's just so happy and fun to me. :)

Thanks @faeriestories! I feel the same way. A shower curtain sounds like a fun way to display patchwork. I have a bunch of quilts that I want to make, as well as pillows, etc., etc. NEVER enough time. :-)

oh god I love this skirt, many years ago I saw a very similar one with the same technique in a magazine and I always wanted to make one, I don't know how I forgot until this moment that you made me remember it 🥰

P.d. my cat looks a bit like yours, he is always here while I do some knitting or sewing

Thank you @irenenavarroart! It's funny how cats know you are busy working on something and want to be near or even on your work. I had one cat who would instantly find a sweater I had just taken off and would make a nest to sleep in.

You are an inspiration! I used to love making patchwork things - quilts, but not the fancy quilting stitch kinds. I haven't sewn in a long time and gave my sewing machine to my DIL. But we are sharing. And I was thinking of buying a serger again.
Can't make the one I have work anymore. But it is an old machine and it had earned its keep a long time ago :)

Awe....that's nice of you to say so @mariannewest! Thank you! I love all the different patchwork designs out these days. There are so many inspiring creator out there!! And if you have any instructional videos you know of on using a serger I would appreciate you letting me know. I bought a used one on Ebay and it is so intimidating!!

I wished I could help you. I used to sew a lot a long time ago and pretty much stopped when sewing at home became more expensive than buying clothing. And my life changed and I was working all the time...
Have you looked for the manual of your brand online? They are often available. It seems the hardest part is to adjust the tension right.
The sewing itself is not that much different. Just that your fabric gets cut, sewn and finished all at the same time.
I used to practice on napkins - straight seams and if the tension is not right, you go over the same side again and just end up with a smaller napkin :)
