When Life was Just about Learning and Growing
So much has changed since I was last at the folk school. While I long for the "pre-pandemic" times, let's look at a few photos from a class I took at the John C. Campbell Folk School. Pattie Bagley was our amazingly talented and funny teacher. Her assistant, Kathleen, was equally talented.
What is so wonderful about spending a week learning a new skill or deepening your knowledge of one you already know is the time the teachers give to their students. And then the students themselves are very talented on their own. It's nice to be around like-minded people who are not only interested in arts and crafts but are interesting people in general. So many wonderful conversations to be had just at the dining hall where we gathered for our meals.
While going through my photos I am seeing quite a few gaps but don't worry. I have supplies at home and want to remake these baskets again this spring and summer, so there will be tutorials to come as we learn together.
The hardest part is the beginning stages. Nothing is really woven together just yet, so the heavy metal ruler is used to stabilize the pieces as I slowly added the weavers on the basket above.
Friday evening was when all the different classes would show-and-tell what they were doing all week in their classes. It was so much fun to see the results of all the hard work during the week. My next post I will share some of the other students' work. It is always such an eclectic and unique blend of old folk artwork with sometimes a new interpretation. Plus, sometimes people make instruments that they perform on during the show and tell. You just never know what to expect at the folk school.
Last day class photo!!
